Taylor Swift Might Receive an Oscar Next Year
Taylor Swift is one of the most successful pop artists in the world. Her country roots embellished with pop music vibes allows her to appeal to a massive audience continually.
This year, Swift released a documentary, Miss Americana, detailing the experience she had creating the Lover album. The pop star has been duped out of awards in the past, but fans are hopeful that her documentary will make her worthy of an Oscar.
‘Miss Americana’ documentary
Earlier in 2020, Netflix released the Miss Americana documentary. The film had previously premiered at Sundance, but it quickly became a must-see for Swift fans.
Miss Americana gives Swifties an inside look at how the country-turned-pop-singer created her most recent album, Lover. It also explores how Swift gained the courage to speak out about her mother’s illness and her decision to become more vocal about her political stance. Miss Americana also introduced the world to a new song, “Only The Young.”
Taylor Swift’s song is eligible for an Oscar
Miss Americana was available to stream on Netflix, but the film also debuted in select theaters for a short period of time. According to Forbes, this should make the documentary eligible for an Oscar.
It’s likely that Miss Americana will be submitted for Best Documentary Feature as well as Best Original Song. Considering Sir Elton John took home the Oscar for Best Original Song for “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” this year, Swift seems to be a more worthy competitor in the song vertical than the documentary award.
“Only The Young” was used specificially for the documentary, a requirement in order to be nominated for an award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Other must-haves for eligibility include that the song must be used in the “body of the motion picture” and it must “feature music and lyrics.” Just before the film ends, Swift introduces us to the song featuring both original music and lyrics.
Taylor Swift’s previous award snubs
If Miss Americana doesn’t receive a nomination, it wouldn’t be the first time Swift was denied recognition. Despite the anticipated success of Swift’s Lover album, the “You Need to Calm Down” singer was snubbed by the 2020 Grammys, having been left out of the most coveted categories in music, including Album of the Year and Record of the Year.
Swift was also nominated for Song of the Year for “Lover,” Best Solo Pop Performance for “You Need to Calm Down,” and Best Pop Vocal Album for Lover, but she didn’t win in any of those categories. Swift’s lack of appearance at the 2020 Grammy’s raised some speculation, but she later turned the focus on the five American Music Awards that she was nominated for.
Will Swift add “Oscar winner” to her list of achievements? While it’s not common for an original song used in a documentary to be nominated for an Oscar, it’s definitely a possibility!
Swift fans will have to wait until the 2021 Oscars to find out if Miss Americana brings home an Academy Award.
