As a singer-songwriter, Taylor Swift rarely upsets her fans. Swifties can’t get enough of her music, even as she tries out different genres. But her taste in movie projects leaves something to be desired. However, with the news of Swift’s casting in a high-profile 2021 film, her fans are worried for a different reason.

Taylor Swift joins the cast of David O. Russell’s latest movie

Swift’s latest announcement doesn’t come from the star herself. Not one to comment on rumors, she remained silent amid reports that she’s appearing in an upcoming star-studded film, Canterbury Glass. But following a few tabloids, major publications confirmed the news.

“Taylor Swift is joining David O. Russell’s latest film, which stars Margot Robbie, Christian Bale, and John David Washington,” tweeted IndieWire. “The cast also includes Rami Malek, Anya Taylor-Joy, Robert De Niro, and more. The movie is completing production in Los Angeles.” Collider noted that “like the plot of the period film, Swift’s role is being kept under wraps.”

Many pointed out Russell’s controversial past

Russell is best known for films like Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle, both of which earned Academy Award nominations. But even before the writer-director achieved this acclaim, reports of his behavior in Hollywood earned him negative attention.

Some of the most notable date back to Russell’s second film, Three Kings. Star George Clooney spoke of a fight between the two on set, with both the actor and the director claiming the other started it. The infamous feud led to Clooney telling Premiere in 2004 (via the Guardian), “Quite honestly, if he comes near me, I’ll sock him right in the f*cking mouth.”

Claims against Russell have piled up over the years. A Daily Beast article from 2017 explores some of the most notable, including the director’s treatment of Amy Adams on the American Hustle set, which led to Bale telling him to “stop acting like an a**hole.”

There’s even video proof of Russell acting inappropriately toward an actor. For example, he screamed at Lily Tomlin on the set of I Heart Huckabees, calling her names while pushing papers off a desk and kicking objects. “We better get some insurance against the director,” she says as he storms off set before returning to yell some more.

Swift is definitely a musician first and foremost. But she’s taken the time to appear in a handful of films. Her first appearance was the 2010 ensemble romantic comedy Valentine’s Day, playing a lovestruck teen.

A couple of years later, Swift did her first animated film. She voiced Audrey in The Lorax, a children’s movie based on the Dr. Seuss book of the same name. Finally, she appeared in Cats, the 2019 musical adaptation as Bombalurina. Though the film tanked at the box office, Swift enjoyed the experience.
