The 2020 Grammy Awards are gearing up at the Los Angeles Staples Center. It’s already proving to be a sad evening following the tragic death of NBA legend, Kobe Bryant and his 13-year-old daughter, Gianna. As a result, fewer celebrities than originally expected may be attending the ceremony.

Though she just premiered her new Netflix documentary, Miss Americana at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah — Lover songstress Taylor Swift just pulled out of her surprise performance.

Swift’s performance was never announced, so her backing out won’t cause any issues with the flow of the show. However, fans are disappointed that the singer/songwriter won’t be gracing the stage or attending the show.

Taylor Swift is nominated for three Grammy Awards

Following the release of her seventh studio album, Lover, Swift is nominated for three Grammy Awards this evening.  Swift is up for Song of the Year for “Lover,” Best Pop Solo Performance for “You Need to Calm Down” and Best Pop Vocal Album for Lover.

Variety is reporting that though Swift was never officially announced to take the stage, the awards ceremony was gearing up for her to take the stage for a possible secret performance.

Taylor Swift left her ‘Miss Americana’ premiere abruptly

Swift was last seen publically at Sundance Film Festival on Thursday, Jan. 23. She was present to introduce her new film, Miss Americana. According to Netflix, “Miss Americana is a raw and emotionally revealing look at one of the most iconic artists of our time during a transformational period in her life as she learns to embrace her role not only as a songwriter and performer but as a woman harnessing the full power of her voice.”

However, fans noted that the songstress left her premiere abruptly, just as the final credits rolled. She did not even stay for the Q&A following the premiere.

This why Taylor Swift canceled her Grammys performance

Though Swift hasn’t publically commented on pulling out of the Grammys, it could be due to a number of reasons. The Red singer recently annouced that her mother Andrea is battling a brain tumor. “Everyone loves their mom; everyone’s got an important mom,” she explained to Variety. “But for me, she’s really the guiding force. Almost every decision I make, I talk to her about it first. So obviously it was a really big deal to ever speak about her illness.”

In addition to her mother’s health, the Grammy Awards is also currently embroiled in a huge scandal. Recording Academy CEO Deborah Dugan just filed a charge of discrimination with the Los Angeles office of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Dugan alleges that she was forced out of her position after she complained about sexual harassment, improper voting conduct, and conflicts of interest at the company’s highest level. She also alleges that the entire system is “ripe with corruption.”

As an outspoken feminist who has spoken up against the sexism in the music industry, Swift may simply not want to align herself with all of the insanity that is happening. It appears that Swift has truly mastered being in the public eye only when she wants to be.
