16 and Pregnant and Teen Mom 2 stars Kailyn Lowry and Jo Rivera have a positive co-parenting relationship today, but that wasn’t always the case. The former couple struggled to navigate a life together after Lowry – now a 28-year-old mom of four – gave birth to their son, Isaac, when she was still in high school.
On a recent episode of Coffee Convos, the podcast Lowry co-hosts with Lindsie Chrisley (formerly of Chrisley Knows Best), Lowry revealed how she and Rivera first met. According to the MTV star, Rivera was actually the one who provided her with weed when they were both in high school.
Lowry said she ‘didn’t party much’ in high school
Lowry told her Coffee Convos co-host that she “didn’t party much” during her teen years. While she considered herself a troubled teen in many respects, she never wanted alcohol to play a big role in her social life.
In fact, the Teen Mom 2 star said she rarely drank at all even now, partly due to her mother’s history of alcohol abuse. As an adult, Lowry explained, she only drank around two times a year and had never allowed it to become a major part of her life.
Still, Lowry told Chrisley that she did smoke quite a bit of weed with her friends as a teenager. The 16 and Pregnant star would often smoke at home or at friends’ houses – which was frequently possible for her, given that her mom often left for long stretches of time.
The ‘Teen Mom 2’ star met Rivera while working at McDonald’s
Not only did Lowry smoke weed in high school, but it was also allegedly what brought her together with Rivera.
Rivera was a year older than Lowry and went to a different high school when they met while working at McDonald’s. (In fact, Lowry told Chrisley, Rivera’s parents also met while working at McDonald’s – a tidbit she found “embarrassing.”)
The Teen Mom 2 star also let it slip that Rivera either gave or sold her weed at the time, which is partly why they initially became close (according to Lowry, at least).
“Without saying too much, I got my weed from him,” Lowry laughed, reflecting on the beginning of her relationship with Rivera. “So that’s how that happened; that’s how that developed.”
The young couple struggled to make their relationship work after Lowry got pregnant
After Lowry and Rivera connected, they had a tumultuous relationship with plenty of makeups, breakups, and fights. The Teen Mom 2 star got pregnant in May of her junior year – on prom night, no less.
“Jo and I hadn’t been together for a year,” Lowry said of the rollercoaster ride. “We had broken up a hundred times before I even got pregnant,” she confessed, adding that it was “just a mess.”
After deciding to keep the baby, Rivera and Lowry tried hard to make things work for their son’s benefit. But with little money or education and a shaky foundation, it was a constant challenge. Lowry’s mom signed over custody and kicked her daughter out, and the teen mom moved in with the Rivera family while she was pregnant.
Each night when she was pregnant, Lowry told Chrisley, Rivera would come home at 4 a.m. from his night shifts at Taco Bell. Just a few hours later, Lowry would take his car to her classes during her senior year of high school. Ultimately, their relationship couldn’t survive the stress of pregnancy and parenting at such a young age, and they broke things off for good.
Needless to say, the young couple’s first few years together (and not together) were more than a little rocky. Since then, though, Lowry and Rivera’s relationship has improved significantly. Now, they peacefully co-parent their son. Lowry even hosts a popular weekly podcast, Baby Mamas No Drama, with Rivera’s wife (and Isaac’s stepmom), Vee Torres Rivera.
