Konami has announced TMNT: The Cowabunga Collection, a compilation of several classic 8-bit, 16-bit, and arcade video games starring Leonardo, Donatello, Michelangelo, and Raphael. ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection’ trailer debuted during State of Play

TMNT fans received a first look at the collection during PlayStation’s State of Play livestream on March 9. The TMNT: The Cowabunga Collection announcement trailer, as seen below, channels all the retro energy with old-school arcade music as the turtle heroes pummel enemies in various brawler games. Some of the featured titles include the original TMNT Arcade game, The Manhattan Project, and Turtles in Time.

As the PlayStation Blog notes, Konami has partnered with Nickelodeon and developer Digital Eclipse to deliver “one of the most comprehensive retro game collections ever.”

“We could tell right away that Digital Eclipse is a natural fit for this project. Digital Eclipse are adept developers and video game historians, having breathed new life to some of the most beloved video game classics,” the post reads. “Beyond their technical capabilities is a genuine connection for the TMNT franchise.”

What games are included in the collection?

TMNT: The Cowabunga Collection includes 13 arcade and console games. Here’s the complete list of titles, per Konami:

  • TMNT: Turtles in Time (Arcade)
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (NES)
  • TMNT II: The Arcade Game (NES)
  • TMNT III: The Manhattan Project (NES)
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters (NES)
  • TMNT IV: Turtles in Time (Super Nintendo)
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters (Super Nintendo)
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Hyperstone Heist (Sega Genesis)
  • TMNT II: Back From The Sewers (Game Boy)
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters (Sega Genesis)
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Fall of The Foot Clan (Game Boy)

In addition to the games, Konami is also developing a digital game guide that will help players through some of the more challenging areas of the collection. Digital Eclipse is also working on quality-of-life changes to modernize some aspects of the games, including “save anytime” and “rewind” features. Plus, TMNT: The Cowabunga Collection will have button mapping and even online play in some games.

Thankfully, TMNT fans won’t have to wait very long for the collection. The end of the trailer boasted a 2022 release window, although a specific date has not yet been revealed. Fans should keep an eye on Konami for any updated timelines.

TMNT: The Cowabunga Collection’s attendance at State of Play means PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 releases are guaranteed. However, according to Konami, the collection will also launch on several other platforms. Fans can expect to see the classic compilation hit PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. Both physical and digital copies will be available for purchase.
