Jaden Smith may be the son of legendary Men in Black actor Will Smith, but he’s his own man now. The 22-year-old entertainer is eager to break free of his parents’ legacy and create a persona that’s all his own. So far he’s succeeding.

Jaden and his younger sister Willow Smith didn’t have a typical childhood by any stretch. Perhaps that was inevitable with two uber-famous parents. So it comes as no surprise that the one question Jaden hates being asked most has to do with his famous father, Will.

The first major role of Jaden’s career just happened to be alongside his dad. The two starred together in the 2006 biographical drama The Pursuit of Happyness when Jaden was just 8 years old.

But after that foray into acting, Jaden struck out on his own. He followed up that project with The Day the Earth Stood Still in 2008 and The Karate Kid in 2010. Jaden was also cast in the 2014 film The Good Lord Bird.

Then Jaden took a break from acting to focus on music, another talent he inherited from his multi-talented parents. The younger Smith isn’t “Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It,” but he did amass a following thanks to his alternative hip hop style and a close connection to his fans.

Growing up the oldest child of Hollywood royalty, Jaden is fed up with always being asked about his dad. He especially doesn’t want interviewers to inquire about Will’s whereabouts and will give a fake answer on purpose.

During an interview with HuffPost, Jaden responded to the question he hates most of all.

“I hate being asked where my dad is, as if I would drop the pinpoint on the exact longitude and latitude of the address of my father currently,” Jaden said.

“I always tell people just, like, the wrong side of the world. The wrong hemisphere, that’s where my dad is. They’re like, ‘Oh, where’s your dad?’ I’m like, ‘Dubai!’ Anywhere else. Anywhere that’s 100 million miles away from where he actually is.”

Jaden may not want interviewers to ask where his dad is. But the father and son duo have a close relationship and an obvious respect for each other, even when they disagree.

Will and Jada Pinkett Smith believe in giving their children lots of freedom and few rules. This unorthodox approach to parenting led to fiercely independent children who are unafraid to be their authentic selves.

“What I do with my children, that I feel that the greatest gift that I can give my children is the freedom to be who they are,” Will told Psychology Today (via thethings.com). “[My wife] and I are very serious about finding what they are and encouraging them to be what they are because you can never be happy being what you’re not.”
