‘The Bachelor’: Dean Unglert Reveals Heartbreaking New Details About Split From Lesley Murphy

Dean Unglert and Lesley Murphy were one of the few happy couples to come out of the first ever Bachelor Winter Games. However, after four months of dating, they shocked fans by deciding to call it quits.

Fans are especially saddened, considering Unglert’s “proposal” to Murphy (with the key to his apartment) on the World Tells All episode of the Winter Games. They seemed like a great match together — so what could have caused them to go their separate ways?

Here’s what we know about their breakup, including the reason Unglert revealed he’s headed to therapy (page 5) and Bachelorette alum Rachel Lindsay’s opinion on their split (page 6).

1. Their relationship was rocky

Apparently, Unglert and Murphy’s relationship was headed toward the end for a few weeks before their breakup. A source told E! News, “It is very recent, but they have been rocky for a few weeks now.”

They added, “Distance and traveling were a factor. They are both going to continue to be friendly and are on good terms, but their romantic relationship has ended.”

2. Unglert addressed the breakup on Instagram

Unglert confirmed his split from Murphy in an emotional post on Instagram. He delved into what love means for him, and how he’s planning to work on himself:

Growing up as a kid I had a crude but utopian idea of what love is. I always had this idea that no matter what you did, no matter how you act, as long as you’re true to yourself and act in good conscious, your path would lead you to the one person on this planet you’re meant to be with. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned that although everyone DESERVES love, it’s not something we’re entitled to.

He also opened up that love takes work, is compromised, and is earned. “I still have a lot of work to do on myself, a lot to prove to myself, before I’m ready for something like that,” he admitted.

3. Murphy shared a statement on her Instagram, too

One day after Unglert’s post, Murphy shared her own statement on Instagram about their breakup. In explaining what she expects out of a relationship, she hinted that Unglert wasn’t ready to commit to her in the ways she wanted.

“I know it’s imperative to find someone who chooses us and acknowledges our many layers, who can be open and vulnerable, and most importantly, who is ready. To meet someone and be met. To be chosen and to choose.” She added, “To love and to be loved. This is everything.”

Murphy also advised, “Don’t be afraid to be the one that loved the most and give everything you had, because you’ve got to find people who love like you do and who are ready.”

4. Unglert says ‘worst part’ of split is losing the love they shared

Even though their relationship became rocky, Unglert admitted that there was definitely love between them. On his iHeartRadio podcast, Help! I Suck at Dating with Dean Unglert, he was asked, “What’s the one thing that you want out of a relationship going in?”

Unglert responded, “I want to feel loved. The worst part about all of this is that Lesley did feel that way about me regardless of everything. I know that she did love me.”

While speaking on his podcast, Unglert opened up about why he’s decided to head to therapy. “I got the one thing that I wanted but it still didn’t end up working out, which is one of the worst things to come to the realization of,” he admitted.

“I’ve been meditating more and I’m going to start going to therapy this week.” He also noted that he “needs to come to terms with a lot of issues.”

6. Their split ‘shocked’ Rachel Lindsay

Bachelorette alum and Unglert’s ex, Rachel Lindsay, was apparently taken by surprise over his split from Murphy. As a guest on iHeartRadio’s The Ben and Ashley I Almost Famous Podcast, Lindsay admitted to her shock.

“I actually thought they were a really good match for each other,” she claims. “I thought that they had a lot of the same interests — like personalities that meshed really well together — and I thought they were going to work out.”

7. Unglert reportedly direct messaged this Bachelor contestant

Bekah Martinez

One person who wasn’t as shocked by the breakup as Lindsay: ex-Bachelor contestant, Bekah Martinez. In a March episode of the Bachelor Party podcast, the Season 22 participant made it clear she didn’t see Unglert and Murphy’s love lasting, saying, “I’ll let my silence speak louder than words.”

So why was she so sure they would call it quits?  At the 9:50 mark in the episode, the podcast host says,”You don’t need to respond, but based on the information you just revealed, which is that you don’t like Dean, you don’t think highly of him, and you haven’t met him, I’m assuming he slid into your DMs in a really creepy way.”

Bekah didn’t explicitly respond in words, but she did essentially confirm the statement by making alarm noises. Of course, it’s unclear when these reported DMs took place, so there’s no way of knowing if they had anything to do with Unglert and Murphy’s split — but at least one other contestant thinks they were a factor.

8. This Bachelor contestant is definitely not shocked by the breakup

Martinez’s fellow Season 22 contestant Seinne Fleming also wasn’t particularly surprised by Unglert and Murphy’s split.

She commented on an Instagram post from E! News about the breakup on April 6, writing, “Shocker. Knew that wouldn’t last when he slid into baby Bekah’s DMs. #feelingpettytoday.”

9. Only one Bachelor Winter Games couple remains

With Unglert and Murphy’s split, only one couple from The Bachelor Winter Games remains. Ashley Iaconetti and Kevin Wendt went their separate ways after the show ended, as did the newly engaged Clare Crawley and Benoit Beausejour-Savard.

Courtney Dober and Lily McManus are the only couple standing, and one look at either of their Instagram pages proves they’re still going strong. Love clearly came out of the Winter Games — though it, unfortunately, didn’t last for everyone.
