‘The Crowded Room’: ‘The Originals’ Writer Thinks There’s a Twist Behind Emmy Rossum Playing Tom Holland’s Mom

Tom Holland is putting aside his Spider-Man suit and taking over the small-screen. Based on a true crime story, Holland will star in Apple TV+’s The Crowded Room. As minor details of the storyline and cast have been revealed, fans were confused why Emmy Rossum was cast in The Crowded Room.

Rossum will play the role of the mother of Holland’s character. The two actors only have a 10-year age difference. The Originals writer has a theory about how Rossum’s character will be portrayed in the anthology series.

The Apple TV+ tackles crime and mental health

True crime is a popular TV genre that hooks fans into criminals’ complex and dark minds and their evil deeds. Apple TV+’s upcoming 2022 series The Crowded Room is partially inspired by The Minds of Billy Milligan, a true-crime novel by Daniel Keyes.

Holland plays the leading role as Danny Milligan. The character is a loose interpretation of the real-life Billy Milligan. The hook of the series? Billy was the first to be acquitted of a heinous crime due to a dissociative identity disorder diagnosis.

The Crowded Room will chronicle Danny’s path to his crimes committed in 1977 and the subsequent psychological evaluation. Fans will go deep into Danny’s complex mind and alter egos through the series. Audiences will also understand the hardships of living with a mental disorder and how they push foward.

Rossum will play the role of Danny’s mother Candy in The Crowded Room, according to Entertainment Weekly. The character details explain, “Through their struggles in life, she dreams of salvation in the form of someone else.” But future fans were skeptical over Rossum’s casting in The Crowded Room.

The Shameless actor is only 10 years older than Holland. Rossum is 35-years-old and does not necessarily look the part to play Billy’s mother. Billy was roughly in his 20s when he committed his crimes.

According to PopSugar, The Originals and Roswell: New Mexico writer Carina Adly Mackenzie has a justifiable explanation of how the storyline could work.

In a Tweet, she said, “Guys — Emmy Rossum is playing Tom Holland’s mom because the vast majority of her scenes are flashbacks to his character’s very early childhood when he endured the trauma that caused his Dissociative Identity Disorder. It started before he was 5 years old.” While the producers have not given full details about the story or its characters, the theory makes sense.

Loki star Sarah Lane will play the role of Ariana, Danny’s friend. Emma Laird will also star as Danny’s friend, Isabel.
