As The Crown Season 4 starts, the spotlight has been thrust on Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s relationship once again. As any royal fan knows, the relationship had a number of ups and downs, with far more issues than good times. The royal family’s poor treatment of Princess Diana became public toward the end of her marriage. Now that people are looking back at Diana’s career and legacy in the royal family, they are noticing there are some aspects that are eerily similar to her daughter-in-law, Meghan, Duchess of Sussex.

Prince Charles and Diana’s relationship

Charles never wanted to marry Diana. In fact, he was in love with his now-wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall even before he began dating Diana, however, his family didn’t think that she would be a good fit for the crown. When Charles went away to serve his time in the British navy, Camilla got engaged to Andrew Parker Bowles. When he returned, she was already married.

Charles made it clear to Diana that he didn’t love her. In fact, he told her so on the night before their wedding.

“One of the most shocking things that Diana told me was that the night before the wedding Charles told her that he didn’t love her,” Diana’s astrologer, Penny Thornton said in ITV’s new documentary The Diana Interview: Revenge of a Princess. “I think Charles didn’t want to go into the wedding on a false premise. He wanted to square it with her and it was devastating for Diana.”

The royal family turned against Princess Diana

Though Diana had been rumored to be on the outs with the royal family for a while, it was her 1995 BBC interview with Martin Bashir where she revealed that Charles had been unfaithful that caused the royal family to completely turn their backs on her.

“Well, there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded,” she told Bashir, revealing Charles’ affair. After the interview, Queen Elizabeth II wrote Diana and Charles a letter strongly advising them to divorce and “be done with it.” The two divorced on August 28, 1996.

Parallels between royal treatment of Diana and Meghan Markle

In a recently resurfaced interview, Diana discussed not having support from the royal family.

“Id like to be a queen of people’s hearts, in people’s hearts but I don’t see myself being queen of this country,” she told the interviewer. “I don’t think many people will want me to be queen, actually when I say many people I mean the establishment that I’ve married into because they’ve decided that I’m a non-starter.”

When asked why she no longer had the support of the royals, she gave an answer that was eerily similar to the problem many critics have said that the royals have with Meghan.

“Because I do things differently, because I don’t go by a rulebook, because I lead from the heart, not the head, and albeit that’s gotten me in trouble I understand that. But someone’s got to go out there and love people and show it.”

Toward the end of the interview, she even sort of alluded to how other women would have to go through the same struggle.

“I think every strong woman in history has had to walk down a similar path and I think it’s the strength that causes the confusion and the fear,” she said. “Why is she strong? Where does she get it from where is she taking it where is she going to use it? “

Meghan has also been criticized for being strong-willed and not just doing things the way that the royals have always done them. It is quite possible that Prince Harry noticed some of his mother’s traits in Meghan and that is what attracted him to her.
