“The power of Christ compels you!” Anyone who has watched The Exorcist will recognize that phrase from one of the most disturbing scenes in cinematic history. Devout Catholic priests chanted the words repeatedly in an attempt to expel evil from a young girl, only to be met with violent resistance from the devil inhabiting her.

Now it appears that the malevolent force will rise again in a brand new sequel. Here’s what we know so far about the upcoming horror movie.

Horror pros at Blumhouse are behind ‘The Exorcist’ sequel

Blumhouse is at it again. The movie studio behind fear-inducing franchises, including the Insidious films, the Paranormal Activity series, and The Purge universe has a new project on the horizon. According to The Observer, Blumhouse and Morgan Creek are partnering to revive The Exorcist.

Horror enthusiasts are already buzzing with anticipation of a Blumhouse-produced Exorcist installment. The production studio has been remarkably successful in the genre by consistently delivering thrills and chills to cinemas around the world.

Audiences recognize Blumhouse’s rock-solid track record of creating incredibly scary movies. But aside from their stellar reputation within fan circles, Blumhouse has garnered critical acclaim for previous projects.

The Blumhouse gem Get Out, which was helmed by Jordan Peele, earned four Oscar nominations, and Peele took home the win for Best Original Screenplay. Another critical darling, BlacKkKlansman from Spike Lee, scored six Oscar nominations and won the award for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Without a doubt, Blumhouse has a slew of commercial and critical successes in their rearview. And looking ahead, The Exorcist has a remarkably talented team working behind the scenes to bring another spine-tingling tale to life.

Horror director David Gordon Green will helm the project

The Observer reported that David Gordon Green will direct The Exorcist sequel. Green has racked up an impressive list of credits as a writer, producer, and director, including Blumhouse’s 2018 reboot of Halloween.

Rounding out the top creative team is a crew of film gurus. Blumhouse studio head Jason Blum will produce alongside Morgan Creek’s David Robinson and James Robinson.

The Exorcist is based on the 1971 novel of the same name by William Peter Blatty. The original motion picture premiered in 1973 amid rumors of supernatural phenomena purportedly occurring in cinemas showing the film.

Due in part to the urban legend-fueled marketing blitz, The Exorcist became a blockbuster, earning $193 million, as reported by Box Office Mojo. The film also spawned four big-screen sequels and a television series, making the franchise a cash cow. What’s more, The Exorcist boasts positive reviews from both critics and audiences, according to Rotten Tomatoes, and is Certified Fresh by the review-aggregation site.

With a priceless legacy, compelling source material, horror gurus behind the scenes, and plenty of early buzz, the forthcoming Exorcist sequel has boundless potential. The Exorcist is slated for release in 2021. And — to paraphrase the original — what a wonderful year for an exorcism.
