The Expanse Season 5 has given viewers a chance to dig deeper into the relationships between certain characters, especially Naomi Nagata’s relationship with Filip Inaros. However, fans are also getting a better look at Camina Drummer’s (Cara Gee) living situation aboard the Dewalt with Oksana (Sandrine Holt), giving viewers more insight into what exactly the nature of their relationship is — including how it relates to the other crewmates onboard.

The Expanse has made no bones about the fact that Camina Drummer is in a polyamorous relationship. In fact, her entire crew aboard the Dewalt is essentially her family. Basically, they represent a polycule.

The Expanse and the book series it comes from have a plural marriage called a “ketubah.” The word comes from a traditional Jewish prenuptial agreement. While Camina Drummer may be the leader of her particular family on the show, she’s filling the shoes of the character Michio Pa from the books, who also heads up a ketubah alongside Oksana.

In this scenario, Oksana was originally the head of the family aboard the Dewalt. When Drummer came aboard and took command, she became the family leader. She shares a romance with Oksana in particular, alongside the rest of the Dewalt polycule.

[Warning: spoilers ahead.] The most recent episode of The Expanse, “Winnipesaukee,” sees Oksana pulled in two different directions. She feels the need to follow Marco Inaros’ plans in order to keep her family safe, but she’s troubled by the fact that she has to hide the truth of Naomi Nagata’s survival from Camina Drummer.

Eventually, Oksana reveals to Drummer that Nagata is still alive. However, she also tells Drummer that she needs to know that Drummer loves her Dewalt family just as much as she cares for Naomi Nagata.

Not the only group family on ‘The Expanse’

Camina Drummer and Oksana’s polyamorous relationship aboard the Dewalt isn’t the only example of a group family on The Expanse. In fact, James Holden also comes from a family of eight individuals.

Basically, Holden’s family of eight consists of a group of activists fighting for traditional land rights. They were married in order to pool their land.

To further their aims, they decided having a child would help them within tax breaks and their cause, as well as make sure their land was passed down to an heir. Holden was carried by one of the women, Elise, but his genetic makeup consists of some portion of each of the eight family members’ DNA.

The Expanse Season 5 will be coming to a close on February 3 with the release of the tenth episode of the season. Amazon has made it clear that Season 6 will be the end of The Expanse’s run on the platform.

“Look, there’s a natural ending at the end of book 6, that both closes this chapter of the show and the big story, but it also leaves the door open for more to come later,” Naren Shankar told Entertainment Weekly

This left some fans wondering if there might be more to come, given that the book series extends past the events of Season 6. While Shankar couldn’t say whether or not there might be more to come, he made it clear that it’s up to the studio, Alcon.

“They control the property, but what I will say is that there’s definitely more to tell and I’m sure Ty and Daniel would say exactly the same thing. But yeah, that’s probably about as much as I can say at this point,” he said.
