Every great superhero film has a gnarly villain. However, in the case of The Flash movie, it appears that the Scarlet Speedster will face not one, but two foes. Here’s the scoop on which baddies are expected to challenge The Flash on screen and who could be cast to play them.

‘The Flash’ movie plot will revolve around ‘Flashpoint’

The Flash movie, starring Ezra Miller, will be based on the DC Comics character, Barry Allen, who gains the superpower of extraordinary speed after being struck by lightning. The speedster also develops the ability to generate lightning bolts and run fast enough to travel through time. In the comics, he creates alliances with other heroes and also attracts the attention of formidable enemies.

For the film’s script, the source material from which to draw is vast, but The Flash director Andrés Muschietti gave fans a hint about the film’s storyline. He told The Hashtag Show that the plot will be a “different version of ‘Flashpoint’ than you’re expecting.” Muschietti is referring to the DC Comics-based narrative in which Barry Allen inadvertently creates an alternate reality when he travels to the past to save his mother from being murdered by Eobard Thawne, aka Reverse Flash.

Reverse Flash will likely appear in ‘The Flash’ Movie

The Flash movie will tell a story of “Flashpoint,” so it stands to reason that Reverse Flash, Barry’s nemesis from the comic story arc, will show up on the big screen. And the rumor mill is swirling about who will take on the role of the character.

Matthew McConaughey is one star who reportedly is in the running to play Reverse Flash, according to We Got This Covered. Based on the Twitter chatter, that is one casting decision that many fans could get behind.

“Someone suggested to me that Matthew McConaughey should play The Reverse Flash in The Flash film. Now I can’t unsee it. Get on it,” tweeted one fan.

The Mirror Master is expected to face The Flash

Insiders believe that Reverse Flash will have some company in The Flash movie, with another villain around to give the Scarlet Speedster some grief. An anonymous source told Fandom Wire that Sam Scudder, the antagonist known as Mirror Master, will pop up in The Flash movie.

That same informant claims that Jessica Chastain is the studio’s choice to portray the character. Casting Chastain would be a departure from the comics in which the Mirror Master is a man, but in line with The CW’s television adaptation that reimagined the character as a woman.

Some buffs think it is a safe bet that Chastain will appear since Muschietti has cast her in two other films. “She’s one of his recurring actresses to appear in his movies. And I go one further. I wouldn’t be surprised if James McAvoy or Bill Skarsgard or both appear in The Flash movie,” noted one fan.

‘The Flash’ movie is scheduled to premiere in 2022

Warner Bros. plans to release The Flash in theaters during the summer of 2022. Although the production timeline has been delayed due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, there has been no indication that the release date will change.

The Flash is a part of the DC Extended Universe slate of upcoming movies which will include Wonder Woman 1984 in 2020, The Batman, The Suicide Squad, and Black Adam in 2021, and Shazam! 2 and Aquaman 2 in 2022.
