When Team Cockroach arrived in the real Good Place in “Patty,” they discovered it was not only the points system that was broken. It was the whole afterlife. Everyone in the Good Place was miserable because they only felt happiness for eternity. The residents were bored and burned out, and the committee quit and left Michael in charge.
Eleanor reminded Michael what she told him while he struggled with his own mortality.
“Every human is a little bit sad all the time because you know you’re going to die. But that knowledge is what gives life meaning,” she said.
Based on this realization, the group comes up with a plan. Somewhere in the Good Place there will be a door.
