A number of fans have wondered over the years about pets in Gilead and they’ve taken to Reddit to discuss the situation. Are pets allowed in Gilead? Some fans say they’ve never seen them and have asked about it while searching for other input from fans.

“What do you think Gilead did to pets?” a Reddit user recently asked. “Since they aren’t allowed, from what we’ve seen. We’ve never seen a dog, anywhere. Do you think they kill them? But then again, there’s not really a reason for that.”

Fans weigh in on the subject

A number of fans weighed in on the subject of animals in Gilead. Apparently, there are animals, at least dogs have been seen by some eagle eye fans. A few fans mention a dog in Commander Warren’s house where Emily (Alexis Bledel) is at one point.

“Well we did see one in Commander Warren’s house,” a Reddit user recalls. “I forgot the episode but Emily was playing with a German Shepherd, and the wife remarked that the dog is happy to finally have someone to play with.”

Mrs. MacKenzie mentions Hannah wanting a dog

Another fan remembers June’s daughter Hannah asked Mrs. MacKenzie for a dog at one point. “I remember in one episode Mrs. MacKenzie said that Hannah was asking for a dog and they were considering buying her one – that probably means pets are still allowed in Gilead. The plot is just too dark to show happy things like a puppy,” a fan pointed out.

Yet another fan recalls Emily playing with Commander Warren’s dog. The fan insists that pets are in fact allowed in Gilead. “Pets are allowed. Emily is seen playing with her commander’s German Shepherd when she’s Ofsteven. And Mrs. MacKenzie mentions Hannah wants one, and they are considering getting a special hypoallergenic one because Hannah’s allergic.”

Food could be scarce and fewer animals are being kept

One fan thinks maybe it’s a shortage of food and that’s why there aren’t more animals seen in Gilead. That would make sense considering there aren’t many situations involving animals.

“The only thing I can come up with is food is scarce enough and feeding it to pets diverts food that could be given to people,” a fan said.

Another fan says they watch with subtitles, and they hear dogs barking a lot. There is a large consensus among fans that there are dogs in Gilead, but what about other animals? It isn’t quite clear and there are differing opinions on the subject.

“I watch with subtitles and I see ‘dog barking in distance’ quite a lot,” a fan mentioned.

There are dogs in Gilead, so animals are allowed to some degree as far as fans know.
