The Haunting of Hill House is a wildly popular Netflix series created, written, and directed by Mike Flanagan. Fans have noticed plenty of easter eggs within the show, including hidden ghosts, the foreshadowing of the Red Room, and nods to the Shirley Jackson novel the show is based upon.

But there is one easter egg fans probably didn’t notice — and it’s one Flanagan has included in a lot of his work.

‘The Haunting of Hill House’ is one of Mike Flanagan’s scariest works

Netflix premiered The Haunting of Hill House in October 2018. The series is based on Jackson’s 1959 novel of the same name.

Previously, the book was adapted into a feature-length film in 1963, The Haunting. The film was later remade in 1999, starring Liam Neeson and Catherine Zeta-Jones, but none were dubbed as terrifying as Flanagan’s 2018 adaption.

Starring Victoria Pedretti, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Kate Siegel, Carla Cugino, and Timothy Hutton, the series follows the Crain family through flashbacks and present-day as they confront the horrifying memories of their childhood. Hill House experienced viral success and will continue as an anthology series with The Haunting of Bly Manor, set to release on Oct. 9, 2020.

Mike Flanagan’s breakout movie ‘Oculus’

Flanagan is a renowned American horror filmmaker who has become known for movies like AbsentiaHushBefore I WakeGerald’s Game, and Doctor Sleep.

His 2013 movie Oculus was Flanagan’s first theatrical release. The movie tells the story of siblings Kaylie (Karen Gillan) and Tim (Brenton Thwaites) whose family was torn apart by the haunted Lasser glass. The mirror is one of the main characters in the film — it serves as a portal for all of the souls it has consumed.

Because Oculus experienced success and opened so many doors for Flanagan, it holds a special place in his heart. As such, he has included the mirror from Oculus in many of his current works.

There are a ton of hidden ghosts in ‘The Haunting of Hill House’

The Haunting of Hill House is scary enough upon first watch. Still, fans have taken notice of the many hidden ghosts throughout the series upon second glance. Most of these ghosts aren’t hidden at all — if you look closely, you’ll see ghosts “hiding” in plain sight.

That wasn’t the only thing Flanagan hid within the Hill House footage. His favorite mirror is in the show, too.

There is an ‘Oculus’ easter egg in ‘The Haunting of Hill House’

The Lasser glass mirror from Oculus can be found in “The Bent Neck Lady” episode of Hill House. As Nell (Pedretti) envisions herself dancing through the halls of Hill House, the Lasser glass can be seen in the background. One eagle-eyed Reddit user grabbed the image.

Flanagan also hid the mirror is some of his other works, including Dr. Sleep. Will he include the Oculus mirror in The Haunting of Bly Manor? Fans will have to wait until Oct. 9 to find out.
