Jennifer Lawrence seems to be laying relatively low these days. She just got married, and she has more than earned a break. At the same time, her fans miss those wild interviews of hers where you weren’t sure what she was going to say next. Those reached a peak when the movie Passengers came out because it was billed as her first sex scene. However, that was far from the only issue that the film faced when it came out.

‘Passengers’ received heavy criticism

Ar first glance, Passengers seemed to be a slick, shiny thriller starring two of the biggest names in movies: Lawrence and Chris Pratt.

The studio teased the scene where Lawrence’s character goes for a swim, and the spaceship she’s in loses gravity. When there’s no gravity, liquid forms a sphere, and the image of Lawrence caught in a big ball of water was striking.

When people realized what the movie was really about, more than a few viewers balked. Pratt and Lawrence are in hypersleep on a large ship. It flies through a storm, resulting in a malfunction, and Pratt wakes up before he’s supposed to.

He spends a year completely on his own, emotionally crippled by loneliness. He spots Lawrence, falls for her, wakes her up, and lies about why he did it. In waking Lawrence up, Pratt was effectively killing her because she’ll die before the ship reaches its destination.

The story could have been a thoughtful look about the ethics of that situation, but as told, it turned a lot of viewers off. Some argued that in essence, the movie was justifying date rape.

Lawrence herself told EW that while she still liked the movie, “there was just stuff that I wished I’d looked into deeper before jumping on.”

What made the ‘Passengers’ sex scene so awkward?

This all stood in stark contrast to the talk around Passengers before it came out. In more than one interview, Lawrence referred to having filmed her first sex scene.

The movie was PG-13, so nothing explicit was shown, but that didn’t make it any easier for Lawrence, who told Seth Myers:

“Pratt’s the best, but I was so nervous. I was paranoid about coming across as a predator, for one, because in sex scenes, you don’t know what to do. Is it enough? But your worst nightmare is, it’s too much?”

Lawrence surely didn’t intend it as such, but her comments could be read as debating the ethical dilemma the movie presented.

Ultimately, the movie did strong if not spectacular business when it came out in 2015. However, the movie almost certainly wouldn’t be made as is in the “Me too” era, which exploded in 2017 after the revelations about disgraced film mogul Harvey Weinstein, who is facing trial for charges related to his scandal.

What is Jennifer Lawrence doing now?

There hasn’t been much news about Lawrence lately. Her last movie was the misbegotten Dark Phoenix, in which she reprised her role as Mystique and more than one person observed she seemed to be phoning in her performance.

But in 2019, she had better things on her mind. She got married to art gallery director Cooke Maroney last year, with Emma Stone, Adele and Amy Schumer at her wedding.

Lawrence is so brash and memorable in her interviews that the silence when she’s not giving them is all but deafening. But she still makes news even when she’s not making movies.

Saoirse Ronan just became the second youngest person to receive four Oscar nominations before the age of 30. Ronan has been nominated for Atonement, Brooklyn, Lady Bird and now Little Women. The oldest person to receive that many nominations was Lawrence, who, according to the Hollywood Reporter, only beat Ronan by a few months.

Lawrence’s nominations were Winter’s Bone, Silver Linings Playbook (for which she won), American Hustle and Joy. She has completed production on an untitled movie about a U.S. soldier who suffers a traumatic brain injury in Afghanistan.
