There’s no one quite like Lady Aelswith (Eliza Butterworth) in The Last Kingdom. Her husband was once the king of Wessex, King Alfred (David Dawson). After his shocking death, Aelswith is left to pick up the pieces. She has changed in season 4 and fans are certainly here for it. Eliza Butterworth, who plays Aelswith, reveals what she’d like to see happen in season 5. Read on to learn more.

Lady Aelswith’s position has changed

When Alfred was alive, Aelswith’s opinion carried a lot of weight. But now, everything has changed for her. Her son, Edward (Timothy Innes), is now the king and he isn’t listening to his mother’s advice like he probably should. Instead, he listens to Aethelhelm (Adrian Schiller), his cruel father-in-law.

Aelswith is being treated terribly and she is being moved to worse rooms than ever before. Her son also treats her like a stranger with nothing good to say or add to the conversation.

Aelswith is forced to give herself a hard look

With Aelswith’s new position diminished, she has to really look at herself and make some changes. She starts to regret past choices and she tries to make up for them by keeping Alfred’s dream alive. Alfred wanted a united England and Aelswith will stop at nothing to have her husband’s dream realized.

She defies her son on more than one occasion. When Mercia is attacked by the Danes, Aelswith tries to get her son to do the right thing and come to their aid. When he doesn’t make a move, Aelswith does it for him. She sends Father Pyrlig (Cavan Clerkin) to the Welsh for assistance in Edward’s name. Thanks to Aelswith’s quick thinking, she helps save her daughter from certain death. Edward does eventually come to their aid, but only after the battle has started.

Eliza Butterworth reveals what she’d like to see happen in season 5

Eliza Butterworth, who plays Lady Aelswith, recently took part in a live Q&A with RadioTimes.com along with Alexander Dreymon who plays Uhtred and the executive producer of the series, Nigel Marchant. They were asked what they would like to see in season 5, which hasn’t been announced yet.

“Well we were talking about Hild and her warrior skills and say maybe Aelswith should start wielding a sword,” Butterworth said. “I think there should just be Aelswith and Hild warrior nun spinoff, obviously. That’s what the fans need that’s what they want. Let’s give it to them.”

Hild (Eva Birthistle) is a warrior nun and friend of Uhtred’s. She’s a good-natured woman and fierce fighter. Butterworth seemed to be joking around when she gave her answer, since she’s pretty humorous in real life and very unlike her on-screen counterpart.
