Season 5 of ‘The Last Kingdom’ is in production, but it will be the final season

Fans learned on the same day that The Last Kingdom is currently back in production that it will end with season 5. The series, based on Bernard Cornwell’s beloved novel series The Saxon Stories, will feature season 5 following the next novels in the series, nine and 10, which are titled, “Warriors of the Storm” and “The Flame Bearer,” according to Radio Times. It will consist of 10 episodes, and viewers could see it later on this year or in the beginning of 2022.

A video announcement was released on the official social media channels on April 30, 2021, that the series is in production, and many of our favorite cast members can be seen, including Eliza and Ruby. Production is currently underway in Hungary.

However, ahead of the video announcement came the news that season 5 will be the final season. Deadline announced the news of the conclusion of the series with season 5, verifying the news with Netflix and Carnival Films. But fans have one more season to look forward to before it’s all over.

Lady Aelswith and Stiorra in ‘The Last Kingdom’

Aelswith, who is originally from Mercia, is the wife of King Alfred the Great (David Dawson). She has two children, King Edward (Timothy Innes) and Lady Aethelflaed (Millie Brady), who is now ruler of the Mercians.

Aelswith is poisoned by Lord Aethelhelm (Adrian Schiller) in season 4 while keeping kept as captives by the Danes. Although they are eventually allowed to go free, Aelswith falls, and her fate is unknown at the end of season 4.

Stiorra is the daughter of the main character, Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon), and his late wife, Lady Gisela (Peri Baumeister). She goes off with Sigtryggr (Eysteinn Sigurðarson), a Dane who took Winchester, as a stipulation for him leaving Winchester and being given possession of Eoferwic. Stiorra was at first a hostage along with Aelswith, but she goes willingly to Daneland, and it’s unclear what kind of life she will lead there.

On May 17, 2021, Eliza Butterworth shared some photos of herself and Ruby Hartley as they can be seen next to an adorable white fluffy dog. The post is tagged in Budapest, Hungary, and it’s possible the images are from the current production session underway. Eliza tagged Ruby in the first image, where they are in a doorway as Ruby can be seen with a hand up and her mouth open with emotion. Eliza is next to her as they bend down, and Eliza has a hand out under the dog’s outstretched paw as she smiles. In the next image, Ruby pets the dog as Eliza holds the pup’s paw, still smiling.

Next is an image of Eliza squatting down as she has a hand on the dog’s head. She has her mouth open as she stares at the camera. In another image, the dog has his paw in the air as Eliza has her hand below it with Ruby by her side. The last images are of Eliza interacting with the dog in a sweet moment.

Eliza captioned the post on Instagram while tagging Ruby: “And I fell in love with a beautiful bear in Budapest!!! Look at this gorgeous fluffy snowflake!! #budabear #sweetsamoyed #puppylove Stiorra and Aelswith need to buy a dog together!!! 🐶💕.” Ruby replied in the comments saying, “The family we’ve all been waiting for ❤️.”

It’s nice to see moments like this. We’ll have to see what other moments cast members of The Last Kingdom share while filming in Hungary.
