Season 5 of ‘The Last Kingdom’ is back in production, but it will be the last season

The story many fans have come to love about Uhtred, son of Uhtred is going to be cut short with season 5, which will be the final season. Deadline announced the news of the conclusion of the series with season 5, verifying the news with Netflix and Carnival Films. The same day the sad news was released, a video was posted later on the official social media channels that the show is back in production. Many fan favorites could be seen in the video, including Alexander Dreymon dressed as Uhtred making the announcement. Emily Cox, as well as Eliza Butterworth, made appearances.

The series is based on Bernard Cornwell’s beloved novel series The Saxon Stories. The final season will follow the next novels in the series, nine and 10, which are titled, “Warriors of the Storm” and “The Flame Bearer,” according to Radio Times. It will consist of 10 episodes, and viewers could see it later this year or in the beginning of 2022.

It looks like Brida and Lady Aelswith will be back for season 5. Fans will recall that Brida was a Saxon child when she was taken in by the Danes. She becomes lovers with Uhtred at one point, and they grew up together. But their relationship is more than complicated, and in season 4, she holds a grudge against him for not killing her after she is found by the Welsh in battle, as she thought she would then go to Valhalla. She is taken as a slave, but she is eventually set free by Sigtryggr (Eysteinn Sigurðarson).

Lady Aelswith, originally from Mercia, is the wife of King Alfred the Great (David Dawson). She has two children, King Edward (Timothy Innes) and Lady Aethelflaed (Millie Brady), who is now ruler of the Mercians. Aelswith is poisoned by Lord Aethelhelm (Adrian Schiller) in season 4 while captive by the Danes. Although eventually allowed to be free, Aelswith falls, and her fate is unknown at the end of season 4.

Emily Cox recently shared a number of images of herself and Eliza Butterworth dressed in their costumes for the series, and the images can be seen on Instagram. The photos are from the current production session in Hungary based on Brida and Aelswith’s new looks, which haven’t been seen before. The shots were taken on a dock where they each sit down with their legs out to the sides while surrounded by water and trees in the distance. Emily has a hand up to her neck and sunglasses on her face in the first post as Eliza’s dress surrounds them. Emily is wearing a long-sleeved brown ensemble with brown pants and boots on with a red belt as well, dressed for colder weather. Eliza has a hand on Emily’s shoulder as she wears her crown with her eyes closed and her mouth open. She has on her royal garments in the colors brown and black in the memorable post.

In the next photo, Eliza looks at the camera with her arm on Emily’s shoulder still. Emily looks off with her mouth open and sunglasses on. In the next shot, they both look at the camera while Emily appears to be laughing as Eliza has her mouth open. In the final shot, Emily smiles while looking to the side as Eliza has her hand out and is making a face.

Emily captioned the post on Instagram: “Just another day at the office with my enemy- queen who I love in real life 💛*.” She credits the person who took the photos, and she also tagged Eliza in the post, as well as the picture taker and the official account for The Last Kingdom. She also added some hashtags: “#thelastkingdom #emilycox #brida #queen.”

It’s always nice to see moments like this between The Last Kingdom cast members. We’ll have to see if any of the other cast members post more images before season 5 drops.
