Uhtred and Brida’s last meeting in season 4 of ‘The Last Kingdom’

In the beginning of the series, Uhtred and Brida are young and grew up together after being adopted by the Danes. They are both Saxon, but they become Vikings in their own right. They are at first lovers in season 1, but it doesn’t last between them. Their relationship is more than complicated, and it seems to worsen as time goes on.

In season 4, Brida holds a grudge against Uhtred for not killing her when she is found by the Welsh in battle, as she thought she would go to Valhalla. She’s taken as a slave, and it’s a hard time for her. It’s also something she blames Uhtred for. She is eventually freed by Sigtryggr (Eysteinn Sigurðarson), and she finds herself allied with him when and they invade Wessex, taking Winchester. But Sigtryggr eventually comes to an agreement with the Saxons to leave Winchester.

Brida attacks Uhtred in the final episode of season 4, stabbing him. He dodges her attacks, but she continues trying to kill him, and he says he “spared” her life, but she insists that he “destroyed” it.

“You know nothing of how I suffered,” she declares.

Brida, who is heavily pregnant with Cnut’s (Magnus Bruun) child, isn’t letting that stop her. “I will not kill you, nor Cnut’s child,” Uhtred tells her.

She replies that the child isn’t Cnut’s but hers. “And he will be loyal to me as no man every has,” Brida tells him. “I will breed in him a hatred of all Saxons.”

Brida continues to try and strike Uhtred, and Uhtred picks up a sword, meeting her weapon in the air and fighting her. But he subdues her, cornering her by a wall. “Fight on and they will kill you,” Uhtred tells her. “If not the Saxon kings then Sigtryggr himself.”

“But I am not afraid of that,” she tells him. “I have not lost faith in what comes after.” She tells him to “do it,” as he has his sword aimed at her. She continues, telling him to kill her.

“If you do not I will become stronger,” she insists. “Blood has been shed. More will flow. I will take revenge on all of these who have betrayed me, and I will not rest until they suffer at my hand.”

She grabs the sword, telling him again to “do it,” but Uhtred can’t. “Or I will be your undoing,” she tells him. He tells her to “just leave,” and adds for her to have her child. She does leave, and goes on to go into labor before the episode concludes.

Fans weigh in on if they think Uhtred ‘could kill Brida’ in season 5

On July 4, 2021, a fan on Reddit asked, “[SPOILERS] ¿Do you think Uthred could kill Brida in the final season?” The fan continued in the post, “I believe that Brida will murder someone very dear to Uthred and he will not forgive her. He will kill her in battle. Then he will cry and suffer, but it will be done.”

One fan can see Brida “doing something” where Uhtred would “be forced” to murder Brida, which could very well happen in the final season.

“I am 100% Brida anti,” they said. “I just can’t with her anymore. I can imagine her doing something so horribly cruel and unforgiven that Uhtred would be forced to kill her. I don’t think he would do it lightly.”

Another fan mentions Uhtred’s son being killed, leading to Uhtred killing Brida. “I feel like Uhtred’s son will be killed and then he’ll kill her,” they said.

“Might happen…hope not…tired of seeing guys kill their former lovers…,” another fan weighed in.

A fan thinks it will happen as the author of the post described. “I see it happening exactly as the OP puts it,” they said. “Sounds like it would go against the books, but it fits the TV narrative.”

We’ll have to see how things play out when season 5 of The Last Kingdom finally returns for the final season.
