Uhtred leads a very interesting life where he constantly feels pulled in two different directions. A Saxon by birth and set to inherit his ancestral lands, he’s taken captive by the Danes and is raised as one of their own. Over the years, he flourishes as a Dane when his adoptive family is murdered and he must ally himself with unlikely people to get revenge and respect.

What are fans saying about Uhtred?

Fans are extremely conflicted about Uhtred and whether or not his actions can be considered justified. He not only kills a priest, but he also neglects a pretty good deal given to him by King Alfred (David Dawson). His response is to take the King hostage.

“Uhtred, who is too stupid to control his temper, kills a priest,” a Reddit user explained. “Alfred offers him a chance to live by serving his son which is really not a bad deal for manslaughter. Uhtred responds by taking the king hostage and essentially creating a situation where all of Wessex wants him dead. I know Alfred wronged Uhtred but that doesn’t give Uhtred the right to act that way.”

Uhtred is impulsive

Uhtred always seems to act impulsively in delicate situations. Some fans however, believe Uhtred can be justified in his actions at times. “Uhtred does do a lot of stupid things, but I would’ve punched that priest too under those circumstances,” a Reddit user wrote.

He’s trying to find his place with the Saxons and the Danes

Uhtred’s journey is all about him trying to find his footing in both worlds. His struggle can be seen in everything he does. “As I see it the whole show is about Uhtred trying to find his place in the world, he is being ripped apart from inside because he is half Anglo-Saxon and half Dane, sometimes he acts like a Dane with Saxons and as Saxon with Danes which is why both sides hate him,” a Reddit user said.

Uhtred has a temper that gets the best of him

Some viewers aren’t fans of Uhtred’s temper that has gotten the best of him on more than one occasion. “I can’t stand his temper, his lack of obedience, his creepy piercing blue eyes that look into my soul, his unstoppable rampages he has from time to time,” another Reddit user observed. “Sure he’s had a bad past, but that’s no excuse to murder a man, a priest at that.”

Some fans feel sympathy for Uhtred

Uhtred experiences a lot in his life and it’s hard to not have some sympathy for him. After his wife dies, Uhtred gets in trouble for disturbing sacred ground and unburying her. He also deals with insults towards his newly deceased wife. That’s a lot for anyone to handle.

“You don’t sympathize with him at all,” a Reddit user inquired. “You know, his wife just died, he had to sneak to burn her as she would have wanted, has to sit and listen in front of the court about how she’s a ‘pagan *****’, and then to have Alfred, who he has given all of himself, try to enslave him to his son? You gotta sympathize just a little no?”

Fans are definitely conflicted when it comes to Uhtred son of Uhtred.
