Season 5 of ‘The Last Kingdom’ is in production, but it will be the final season

The series is based on Bernard Cornwell’s beloved novel series The Saxon Stories. There isn’t a premiere date just yet, but season 5 will follow the next novels in the series, nine and 10, which are titled, “Warriors of the Storm” and “The Flame Bearer,” according to Radio Times. It will consist of 10 episodes, and viewers could see it later on this year or in the beginning of 2022.

On April 30, 2021, a video announcement was released on the official social media channels, the same day the news was released ahead of it that the series will be ending after this last season. The video featured Alexander Dreymon as Uhtred making the announcement about production, which is taking place in Hungary. Many other favorite characters could be seen as well.

That same day, fans learned that season 5 will be the final season. Deadline announced the news of the conclusion of the series with season 5, verifying the news with Netflix and Carnival Films.

See Uhtred’s look in season 5 of ‘The Last Kingdom’

On June 16, 2021, fans were treated to an image of Uhtred in season 5 via the official social media channels. The image features the name of the show at the top right of the photo. Uhtred can be seen in the middle, complete with his sword on his back. He is looking rather serious as he looks off, and his hair, which is short on the sides and shaved and also longer on the top, is up and back out of his face. It looks like he has a braid in it, and his hair seems a lot longer than the last time we saw Uhtred in season 4. He’s in a shirt with warrior attire on as well.

At the bottom of the image, a quote from Uhtred can be seen. “’If I die, I will haunt you to the end of your days…’ -Uhtred,” it says. It’s unclear exactly where he is based on the image though.

Alexander Dreymon is tagged in the image on Instagram, and the post is captioned, “It’s time to look ahead… The journey continues but who will join the quest and who will fall? #thelastkingdom #TLK5.”
