In The Last Kingdom, Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon) goes through his fair share of women. His first wife, Mildrith (Amy Wren) is his polar opposite. However, they form an attraction to each other and Mildrith even gives birth to Uhtred’s child. The romance doesn’t last though and the two split up in a very messy way.

The marriage between Uhtred and Mildrith is arranged by King Alfred (David Dawson) as a way to tie Uhtred to the land as well as keep him bound to Wessex. Uhtred has no idea at the time, but Mildrith owes a lot of money to the church. It’s a way for Alfred to control Uhtred and it leaves a bitter taste in his mouth.

The marriage blossoms from a political arrangement into love, but it doesn’t last. The two are so different and one major factor keeps pulling them further from each other, and that’s their different religions. When Uhtred brings home a new woman, Iseult, the damage is done. He refuses to stay inside the house if Iseult has to stay in the barn and he chooses her over his wife. After that, there is no repairing the relationship.

Uhtred’s son dies and it’s a devastating turn of events. Uhtred is convinced it’s because Iseult saves King Alfred’s child, and he in turn lost his own.

Mildrith goes off to Odda’s (Simon Kunz) estate to live away from the farm and her memories of Uhtred. She has made her choice since Uhtred chose another woman over her.

What happens to Uhtred’s first wife Mildrith after they sever ties?

Mildrith decides to take the vows of a nun and live in Odda’s household. Uhtred eventually comes calling at Odda’s home and finds Mildrith. She tells him she’s found peace and he should try and do the same after the loss of their son. When Uhtred asks how the child died, Mildrith tells him that children are frail. She doesn’t want anything to do with Uhtred again, and she has her way.

Uhtred moves on

Uhtred moves on with Iseult for a time, that is until she is brutally murdered. He eventually finds love with Gisela (Peri Baumeister), until she dies in childbirth. She gives him three children, and he takes her death very hard. He next finds affection for Lady Aethelflaed (Millie Brady), though she has to give him up to be the Lady of Mercia.

Uhtred’s love life has been full of twists and turns. It’s hard to imagine how different many of these women are to one another. Uhtred will always have his memories of his time with Mildrith and their son on their little farm. It’s sad to think about how things might have turned out if they had been able to make things work between them.
