2021 is coming to a close with no new updates on The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2. At this point, many fans have lost hope that the sequel will really arrive next year. The last nail in the coffin seemed to be The Game Awards 2021, which came and went without even so much as a proper title announcement for the newest Zelda game. However, despite fan concerns of a delay, Nintendo insiders have allegedly confirmed that the studio is still planning a 2022 release for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2. Here’s what we know.

‘The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2’ did not appear at The Game Awards 2021

On Dec. 9, hundreds of Zelda fans tuned in to The Game Awards 2021 in the hopes of seeing some sort of news about Breath of the Wild 2. After all, what better way is there to end the franchise’s 35th anniversary year than with an update on one of its most highly-anticipated installments yet?

A few days before the show, host Geoff Keighley teased an unnamed world premiere video that was two and a half years in the making. He didn’t mention Breath of the Wild 2, but many fans pointed out that it’s been two and a half years since Nintendo first announced the game.

Unfortunately, that turned out to be completely coincidental. The Game Awards 2021 didn’t feature the upcoming sequel at all, except for a quick mention of its Most Anticipated Game of 2022 nomination.

For many fans, no news seemed like bad news. However, Nintendo could have held Breath of the Wild 2 back from The Game Awards for a number of reasons. As Screen Rant pointed out, the studio would likely want to save any updates for its own events, like a Nintendo Direct.

Nintendo is allegedly still planning a 2022 release for ‘The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2’

At the time of this writing, Nintendo has not announced any Breath of the Wild 2 delays. According to IGN Games podcast host Peer Schneider, the game is on track. During the latest episode, Schneider said he caught up with “some people in the industry,” who reportedly told him Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 still has the same 2022 release date goal.

“It does sound like Nintendo is going to have a pretty good year next year,” Schneider explained. “So, I would not take the absence of big stuff [at The Game Awards] as a sign that maybe Breath of the Wild is delayed or that they don’t have other stuff, because it sounds like … people at Nintendo are very excited about 2022.”

Later, Schneider indicated that the game might arrive in November 2022. However, that release window remains unconfirmed. It’s unclear if his comment was purely speculation or based on insider information.

Even after two years, Nintendo has still kept most Breath of the Wild 2 details under wraps. Fans don’t even know the sequel’s official name yet because it would give too many plot details away, as IGN reported.

So far, Nintendo has offered two trailers with brief glimpses into Link and Zelda’s next adventure in Hyrule. Additionally, some leaked Breath of the Wild 2 patents hinted at the game’s mechanics. Beyond that, the sequel remains a mystery.
