While the Surface has plenty of dangers in The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Skyloft, the world above the clouds, has its own problems. In Skyward Sword, a missing child named Kukiel is reported by her mother Wryna after Link places the Ruby Tablet in the Statue of the Goddess. It falls to the player to locate and rescue Kukiel before something tragic happens.

When does the ‘Skyward Sword’ missing child mission take place?

While Wryna only tells Link that her daughter went missing after placing the Ruby Tablet from the Skyview Temple, Kukiel actually disappears much earlier.

Link first encounters Kukiel at her house while looking for his Crimson Loftwing. She tells him about playing with her ‘special friend’ later. However, kids often have imaginary friends, and Wryna mentioned that Kukiel had a habit of disappearing at times.

After Link obtains Fi and the Goddess Sword, though, Kukiel is nowhere to be found. The Skyward Sword missing child mission begins with Wryna asking Link to locate her daughter. With rumors of monsters around Skyloft, it sounds like Link might have a battle soon.

Link pauses his search for Zelda briefly to make sure the girl returns home safely.

How to find the missing child in ‘The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword’

A few residents around Skyloft heard the rumors of the Skyward Sword missing child, like Orielle, who Link can find near the graveyard. Once Link tells her he believes monsters have started abducting children in Skyloft, Orielle tells Link about the older man Rusta at the Lumpy Pumpkin.

Using Link’s Loftwing, fly to the southeast until you find what looks like a giant pumpkin. Head inside and speak to Rusta. He tells rumors about the ‘Skyloft monster.’

He tells you that he saw the horrifying creature at night in the graveyard hitting and pushing the gravestone closest to the giant tree. If Link recreates these events, a door opens to reveal a hidden ladder.

Following the rickety path below, Link hears a scream from an abandoned-looking house beneath Skyloft. Inside, a monster towers over the Skyward Sword missing child, Kukiel. Link draws his sword and prepares for a boss fight, only to discover the monster is incredibly cowardly.

It turns out that the monster, named Batreaux, was the ‘special friend’ Kukiel mentioned earlier in the game.

As the spirit of the Master Sword, Fi has a divine power that she uses to inform Link about people and enemies. And she has some curious dialogue for Kukiel in particular.

“She has the unique ability to get along with anyone. I conjecture this is possible because she harbors no fear or suspicion of those around her,” Fi says about the missing child in The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword.

Whether or not this ‘unique ability’ comes from her charm or something is never confirmed. However, she seems to be the only Skyloft resident to give a chance to Batreaux, who she calls ‘Uncle Bats.’

Kukiel’s mother and father, Jakamar, give Link the first clusters of Gratitude Crystals. These can be given to Batreaux in exchange for some great upgrades like bigger wallets and even a piece of heart.
