The breakout star of The Mandalorian was not a returning character to the galaxy far away, nor was it an actor from the show’s superstar cast. Instead, it was an adorable little character called The Child.

Dubbed Baby Yoda by fans, the child resembles the much-beloved Star Wars character from the original series but remains a mysterious character. However, a new fan theory says that while the character appears to look like Yoda, it could be another type of creature disguised in the green form.

Who is Baby Yoda?

Both aspects of the Baby Yoda moniker might be slightly misleading. Although the character appears to look like the ancient Jedi Master from the film franchise, its real name remains a mystery.

Add to that that it is not a baby at all, but a 50-year-old creature and the story behind it gets a little bit more complicated.

In a galaxy that often gives meticulous detail to even the most minor characters, Yoda himself is something of a mystery. The short, green, long-eared Yoda’s species doesn’t even have a name in the Star Wars universe, and it’s implied that they are extremely rare. It makes sense, then, that Baby Yoda is such a hot commodity in the world of The Mandalorian.

The young child, while infant-like, has already displayed that he is strong with the force throughout his adventures. While the extent of its power is unknown, he’s shown an ability to lift objects, heal people, and even commit murder if he feels threatened. Other than that, however, the character is still shrouded in much mystery.

Where did he come from? What is his role in the Star Wars universe? Will we find out in season two? With the return of The Mandalorian just weeks away, fans are already speculating on what we might learn. One particular theory has fans extra excited.

Is Baby Yoda actually what he seems?

Changelings are a part of the Star Wars universe. In Attack of the Clones, a rogue assassin is revealed to be a changeling after Obi-Wan Kenobi chases them down. However, we have not seen someone who has that power on top of those of the Jedi, and if Baby Yoda is a case of this, it might explain why the character is so sought after in the universe. Dais Johnston of Inverse noted this fan theory, which originated in a deleted Reddit post.

While this is mere speculation, the idea that a fifty-year-old child with the force’s powers on top of being a changeling makes sense within the Star Wars universe, at its core, every conflict that fans have seen is part of a significant struggle over who reigns supreme across the galaxy. Often, having the right soldier to lead the charge is the difference between victory and defeat.

If the wrong people got their hands on a young Jedi changeling, it could change the balance of the entire universe. However, even if the child is merely a young version of the same species Yoda was, this fact remains the same. Whatever the case may be, the idea that Baby Yoda is not what he seems is a Star Wars fan’s dream, and fans won’t have to wait long to find out if this is the case.
