HBO struck gold in 2016 with the release of the comedy-drama series Insecure. Created by writers Issa Rae and Larry Wilmore, Insecure follows Issa and her best friend Molly as they navigate their career and relationship experiences in Los Angeles.

The show scored strong ratings for each of its three seasons and has become a fan-favorite. But over the past year or so, there has been little word about the fourth installment, which has been a real bummer for viewers. Fortunately, though, Rae recently announced that season 4 is on the way, sharing the release date and a hilarious teaser to go along with it.

Watch the teaser for ‘Insecure’ Season 4

On Jan. 15, Rae — who also stars on the show as Issa — posted a teaser for the upcoming season on her Instagram page. The clip shows Issa standing in front of a mirror spitting one of her signature raps, in which she talks about leveling up and being on her grind.

Fans will recall that Issa had just started to find her footing in season 3 following a couple of rocky years, so it seems that season 4 will show her adjusting to the next stage of her life.

Rae wrote in the caption that the show will return to HBO on April 12.

Usually, Insecure releases a new season each year. But after season 3 wrapped in 2018, Rae took some time off to focus on her budding film career. She starred in Little (2019) alongside Regina Hall and Marsai Martin, and she’s slated to appear in The Photograph (February 2020) with Lakeith Stanfield.

More on ‘Insecure’ Season 4

In early January, Rae appeared on a Television Critics Association panel where she talked to Showbiz Cheat Sheet about what fans can expect in the forthcoming season.

“I think this season is about our characters leveling up, entering that next phase in their life when they’re deciding to be intentional about a lot of the decisions they’re doing,” she explained.

Viewers saw Issa undergo some serious life changes in season 3. She celebrated her 30th birthday, got her own place, left her unsatisfying job at We Got Y’all, and ended her fling with Nathan after he repeatedly flaked on her.

Now, she’s ready for the future. Rae elaborated on Issa’s new journey, saying:

“Issa specifically has quit her job and she’s pursuing this passion. Those are some of the things that we’re tackling, in addition to the fallout that happens when you’re turning 30; the relationships, the friendships that you have to work at in a different way. Some things phase out.”

Issa Rae talks about other storylines in ‘Insecure’ Season 4

Rae went on to talk about what viewers can expect to see from Molly, a hopeless romantic who has longed for a serious relationship since the show’s inception but has a habit of self-sabotaging. In season 3, Molly (Yvonne Orji) began dating Nathan’s roommate Andrew — or as the Internet calls him, “Asian Bae.”

Rae admitted: “Molly is in her first real relationship in a very long time, trying to prioritize that, and balance her work and relationship.”

“Molly does go to therapy, so that helps,” Orji added. “I think she’s trying to, like Issa said, level up. This whole season is about trying to figure out who we all are, and who she is. I think the friends called her on it last year, just because he’s Asian he can’t be an option? And I think Molly’s trying to figure out if that is a thing she wants to explore, and if so, how. She is trying to be happy, but she doesn’t know how.”

There’s also more from Issa’s ex-boyfriend, Lawrence (Jay Ellis). Lawrence is dating Condola, one of Issa’s peers — and things get complicated.

It’ll be interesting to see how this all unfolds. Remember, the show kicks off on April 12. You won’t want to miss it.
