Most fans of The Office focus on Jim (John Krasinski) and Pam (Jenna Fischer.) It was pretty obvious from the start that they were supposed to end up together.

But they aren’t the only characters that were planned to get together from the very beginning. There is an odd couple that eventually gets together. This is the couple and more to know about their first kiss.

The episode, “The Client” shows Michael (Steve Carell) and Jan (Melora Hardin) working together to land a new client. Jan is understandably worried that Michael will tank the situation, but is happily surprised.

The episode ends with him managing to make a deal. She is impressed with him so much that they end up kissing. That’s the start of a very weird relationship between the two characters.

Hardin was a guest on the podcast, Office Ladies in the episode “The Client.” She revealed Jan and Michael’s weird relationship was always planned.

“When we were filming the pilot I remember sitting at the tables with Greg Daniels and Steve Carell and we were all laughing at kind of how weirdly interesting Jan and Michael were together,” she revealed. “We sort of were like, well, yeah that’s funny. If we get a pick-up and we get an opportunity to do more of the show than just the six [episodes] that we were doing… our first season, then it’ll be fun. We should have them hook up.”

The show continued and they got to explore their relationship. Hardin addressed one rumor about filming their first kiss that wasn’t true.

She said their first kiss wasn’t that rehearsed

The actress talked about the couple’s first kiss. She said it didn’t take much for them to get what they needed while filming.

However, a fan mentioned that B.J. Novak claimed the kiss between Michael and Jan was rehearsed and filmed “many, many, many times.” “I don’t remember rehearsing it,” said Hardin. “I’m certain that when we rehearsed it we certainly didn’t kiss during the rehearsal.”

The actress mentioned how the kiss wasn’t actually perfect. She noted it was “awkward.”

“I thought it was a great first kiss for the two of them,” she said. “I actually think the take that you see on there is the first time we did it, and it has everything it needs in it. It has the tension, it has the kind of ‘wait that’s so wrong’ and ‘wait a second, I want more of that’ thing that I think Jan struggled with the entire relationship with Michael.”

Jenna Fischer mentioned how the scene was filmed with someone being behind a car to make it look like a spy shot. “You really do feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere doing your own thing, having that private moment that we’re all trying to strive for at all times as actors,” said Hardin.

Obviously Michael and Jan didn’t work out, but it’s interesting to know they were destined to at least hook up.
