Everyone knows about the highly publicized time when the golden couple, Prince William and Kate Middleton, broke up. It’s hard to imagine it now, especially since they’re practically perfect in every way. But back in 2007, they took a break that almost resulted in a permanent end to their relationship.

The British monarchy would look vastly different without the current Duke or Duchess of Cambridge and their three children. No doubt Prince William would have married someone else – perhaps even the woman his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth, had hoped he would marry in the first place: Princess Madeleine of Sweden. But we all know how this story ended.

Here’s the real reason Kate Middleton and Prince William ultimately ended up together.

How did Prince William meet Kate Middleton?

In the days before online dating, Kate Middleton met the future king of the United Kingdom in a typical way – at school. The two were attending the University of St Andrews and living at St Salvador’s Hall dormitory for about a year before Prince William “fell for her” after watching her parade down the runway in a skimpy outfit during a charity fashion show. They started their relationship shortly after.

The 2007 split of Prince William and Kate Middleton was one of the most highly publicized of all time. Apparently, Prince William broke it off over the phone after he had started having doubts about their future together. He allegedly said, “I can’t… It just isn’t going to work. It isn’t fair to you.”

Royal insider sources blame the split on the couple’s young age and the enormous amount of pressure they were under. People were already calling Kate, “the Next People’s Princess,” and comparing her to Prince William’s mother, Princess Diana. All the attention, even positive, put a lot of strain on both of them.

Kate Middleton didn’t originally want to break up with Prince William. In a TV interview, she said, “At the time I wasn’t very happy about it, but it actually made me a stronger person. You find out things about yourself that maybe you hadn’t realized. I think you can get quite consumed by a relationship when you are younger, and I really valued that time for me as well although I didn’t think it at the time.”

We all know how this story ends: the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge got back together, got married, had a fairytale wedding, and lived happily ever after. But what was the catalyst that made them get back together?

The short answer is a little bit of well-placed jealousy. After their break-up, Kate started hitting the London club scene and was caught on camera spending quality time with “a handsome heir to a British shipping fortune.” Prince William was also seen canoodling with several other women while the pair was on a break.

They realized they didn’t want to live without each other

Sometimes spending time apart from someone just proves how much they mean to you. Apparently, even though they were openly seeing other people, they still kept in constant contact during their breakup. It wasn’t long before they realized that no one else would measure up.

In the case of Prince William and Kate Middleton, a little time apart and the wake-up call that neither wanted to see the other end up with someone else was enough to get them back together. After all, the heart wants what it wants.
