Kaley Ronayne has joined ‘The Resident’ Season 5 cast

FOX has tapped former Gotham star Kaley Ronayne to take on the role of Cade. According to IMDb, Ronayne has become known for her role as Sasha Van Dahl in Gotham, as well as Sandy Williams in 2016’s Quarry. She has also appeared in several popular cop dramas, including Blue Bloods, NCIS, Chicago P.D., NYPD Blue, and more. Most recently, Ronayne starred in 2020’s The Right Stuff as Dee O’Hara and 2021’s Thanks For Letting Me Crash as Claudia.

‘The Resident’ Season 5 will introduce the ‘action heroine’ Cade

Elkoff told TVLine that Ronayne’s character would become an “action heroine” in the second half of The Resident Season 5. He described Cade as “mysterious” and “guarded about her past.” Like many Chastain doctors, Cade has her own unique methods and approaches to treating patients. She does have a rational side, but she’s also not afraid to do anything daring.

The showrunner didn’t say exactly how Cade’s presence would affect Chastain and her colleagues. However, Elkoff did tease that the character would “help us do one of those thriller-y arcs that we’ve done in the past.”

Elkoff added that he already could tell viewers will have “strong feelings” about Cade.

“She’s going to attract a lot of attention while trying to keep a low profile, which is sometimes complicated,” he said. “I just imagine that the audience is going to have really strong feelings — a lot of theories and a lot of predictions.”

The final moments of The Resident Season 5 Episode 5 introduce a major twist: the show jumps forward three years. This might take some getting used to in future episodes, but it gives the medical drama a clean slate for new storylines. When The Resident returns in early November after a brief break, the characters’ lives will be in very different places.

For protagonist Conrad Hawkins (played by Matt Czuchry), that means finding new love three years after the death of his wife, Nic Nevin (Emily VanCamp). As Yahoo reported, Elkoff teased that Conrad would end up with someone new by the end of season 5. There will be a few potential love interests to keep fans guessing. Conrad may take on a romance with Cade, or maybe Nic’s close friend, Billie (Jessica Lucas).

“We will try to tell stories in a way, going forward, where the audience will go, ‘It’s going to be her. Wait, no! I think it’s going to be her. No, wait a minute. I bet you it’s going to be her,'” Elkoff said, per Yahoo. “We’re going to try and pepper the episodes with moments of connection and collaboration and emotional moments with different people, where you feel like you’ve seen the beginning of something, and you may be right, or you may be wrong.”

New episodes of The Resident air on Tuesday nights at 8 p.m. on FOX.
