The ‘Sex and the City’ Reboot: Michael Patrick King Debunks the Most Enduring Rumor About ‘And Just Like That…’

Michael Patrick King is talking a lot ahead of the release of 'And Just Like That...' on Dec. 9. In a recent interview, he revealed that no one, including Mr. Big, dies in the upcoming 'Sex and the City' reboot. The revelation has fans who have spent months speculating about the show's storyline back to square one.

And Just Like That…, the Sex and the City reboot is less than a week away from its premiere. Fans have spent the last several months discussing, debating, and theorizing about what will be included in the upcoming HBO Max series. Now, just days before its official release, showrunner, Michael Patrick King, has debunked one of the most enduring rumors about the show’s main storyline. He just revealed that no one dies.

The most enduring rumors about the ‘Sex and the City’ reboot

When a project is as hyped as And Just Like That…, rumors about the series are expected. When a production is filmed almost entirely on the streets of a major metropolitan city, storyline leaks are almost inevitable. In the months since And Just Like That… began filming in New York City, rumors about the series have come and gone. One rumor, however, has had more staying power than most.

Sex and the City fans have spent months speculating about a potential death storyline. Many believed that the series would follow Carrie Bradshaw as she navigated life after losing her husband, Mr. Big. Mr. Big’s death was, in the minds of some fans, a done deal. The evidence didn’t entirely convince everyone that Mr. Big would leave this earth. A funeral scene left most fairly certain someone would die, though. Over the last several months, fans have made cases for the death of Samantha Jones, Magda, Mr. Big, and Stanford Blatch. All the theorizing was likely for naught.

Michael Patrick King reveals that no one dies in ‘And Just Like That…’

Michael Patrick King has been busy for the last two years. Besides conceptualizing and filming a reboot of Sex and the City, he’s been sitting down for plenty of interviews ahead of the show’s premiere. In his most recent chat with The New York Times, King revealed something pretty important about the upcoming series. He confirmed that many fans have been wrong all along. He told the publication that no one dies in the series.

King’s straightforward response seems to put to bed months of speculation about a rumored funeral scene and what exactly it could mean for the upcoming series. While the big reveal completely debunks the prevailing rumor, it does little to fill fans in on what is to come. In fact, most loyal fans are more in the dark than ever about the main plotline of the reboot. That’s probably the point, though.

Michael Patrick King clarifies that they did not write Willie Garson’s death into the series

King has made it clear that none of the main characters will die in season 1 of the reboot, but the cast of And Just Like That… has dealt with real grief. In September 2021, Willie Garson, the actor who portrayed Stanford Blatch, died from pancreatic cancer. Garson, a proud father of one, was one of the strongest supporters of the reboot and was heavily involved in the production in the weeks before his death. He was 57.

Garson’s passing shocked fans and devastated his friends and castmates. King wants everyone to know that Garson’s death was not written into the series and will not be mentioned as part of the storyline, at least not yet. A second season of the series is not entirely off the table. If HBO Max orders a second season, Garson’s absence likely will need to be explained. How the cast and crew will choose to do that is anyone’s guess. Garson did complete several scenes that are likely to be included in the series before he died.
