The plot for the  Sex and the City reboot is finally coming into focus. It has been more than 10 years after the largely despised Sex and the City hit theaters. Now, fans will get the chance to catch up with Carrie Bradshaw, Miranda Hobbes, and Charlotte York. Decidedly absent will be Samantha Jones. While fans are sad that the iconic character will not be a part of the storyline, the showrunners are hinting at exciting changes. New friendships will, reportedly, be forged.

Sex and the City reboot showrunner promises new friendships

Sammy Jones won’t be returning to the cast. It’s a big blow, but those close to the project, think it will work out just fine. Casey Bloys sat down with TV Line and dished on what is coming up in the limited series. Based on what Bloys, the chief content officer at HBO Max, told the publication, the show will deal with Samantha’s absence by bringing in new friends to fill the void.

Kim Cattrall, who portrayed Samantha for all six seasons of the series, insists that she isn’t interested in returning to the series. She doesn’t want Samantha to disappear, though. Cattrall has said that she would like to see someone else step into the role. The idea of replacing Cattrall with a different actor portraying Samantha doesn’t sit well with fans. A brand new character could certainly be interesting, though.

Candace Bushnell is sure the writers will address Samantha’s absence

Tossing another actor into the role didn’t sit well with fans, and it doesn’t seem to sit well with a lot of actors, either. Jennifer Coolidge has been mentioned as a possible replacement, but she insists she isn’t interested in filling Cattrall’s shoes, even though she is a fan of the show. Several other names have been thrown around, too.

Candace Bushnell, whose column and books inspired the show, doesn’t think the writing team will go that way either. According to People, Bushnell is confident that the writing team will find a creative and interesting way to explain Samantha’s absence while still honoring what she once brought to the friend group.

Will the friend in And Just Like That really be new?

If the team behind the Sex and the City reboot really do decide to add a new fourth to the famed friend group, it could be a familiar face. Jennifer Hudson has expressed her interest in rejoining the cast. Hudson sat down with Entertainment Tonight and mentioned that she would be down to reprise her role.

Hudson famously took on the role of Carrie’s assistant during Sex and the City: The Movie. Her portrayal of Louise from St. Louis was largely praised, and she certainly would bring a fresh new appeal to the series. Michael Patrick King has not publicly commented on Hudson’s interest in the series. Still, Hudson would fit in nicely with King and Sarah Jessica Parker’s reported vision of the show. Bloys noted that the team hopes to bring a diverse cast to the screen to better reflect today’s New York.
