Meghan McCain returned to The View on Jan. 4 after being on maternity leave. Welcoming her first child, Liberty Sage, in September with husband Ben Domenech, McCain gave some details on how she’s been enjoying motherhood during her time away.

Keeping any photos of Liberty basically under wraps since her birth, McCain finally shared some pictures of her baby girl on social media, much to the delight of her fans.

Meghan McCain had a busy maternity leave

The conservative co-host began teasing her return on Twitter in December. Off the air during the landmark 2020 presidential election, McCain facetiously noted how eventful her time away has been.

“It’s almost time,” she tweeted. “I’m so excited to take my spot as the conservative seat back at the Hot Topics table (virtually) The View on Monday. Did I miss anything while on maternity leave?”

Despite all the action during her leave, McCain was grateful for the uninterrupted time she had with her newborn.

“I’ve been loving every moment with Liberty and have been so appreciative of the time ABC has given me,” McCain told People before her return to The View. “There has been so much that has happened since Liberty’s arrival so I’m so excited to bring my perspective back to The View. Also, I miss my co-hosts!”

‘The View’ star describes motherhood as ‘amazing’

McCain was gushing over her daughter upon her return to the airwaves, describing her take on becoming a parent.

“Motherhood’s insane,” she told her co-hosts during their virtual show. “After I gave birth, I was like, ‘Women do this. This is what we do, we give birth like this.'”

The View star previously shared that she suffered a miscarriage in 2019, where she does not take the gift of motherhood for granted.

“Being with a newborn baby has been surprising to me,” McCain commented. “Motherhood, I think as everyone knows, was not a simple journey for me. Being with her is like the way I’ve heard described taking ecstasy. It’s just amazing.”

Meghan McCain advocates for paid maternity leave

McCain often speaks lovingly of her late father, Senator John McCain, who died in August 2018 from brain cancer. She sees the birth of her daughter as getting to have a part of him in her life again.

“I’ve been in this bubble of love,” McCain revealed. “[Liberty’s] just perfect, and it feels like having a little piece of my dad back.”

After requiring an emergency cesarean delivery and experiencing postpartum preeclampsia, McCain was dependent on her husband and mother-in-law to help her take care of Liberty after her birth. The View co-host is hoping to call more attention to the need for paid maternity leave in the U.S.

“This is something that’s really, a really dark spot for our country,” McCain noted. “We are the only developing nation that doesn’t supply women with paid family leave. We as conservatives have to come together and allow all women in this country no matter where they’re from or their socioeconomic class the capacity to have what I just had, which is three months of bonding time and breastfeeding and healing.”

Along with The View posting some adorable pictures of baby Liberty, McCain put up some of her own including one on Instagram with the caption, “Someone wanted to see me?”
