The Witcher is scratching the itch that Game of Thrones left when it concluded. Netflix’s adaptation of the book series starring Henry Cavill has captivated audiences and left fans wondering when a second season will be released. Here’s what we know about The Witcher Season 2.

‘The Witcher’ is one of the most unique shows on Netflix

The Witcher covers an extensive amount of time throughout season 1. According to showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich, Ciri’s story takes place over two weeks, Yennefer’s takes place over 70 years, and Geralt’s takes place over 20 years.

That’s not an easy feat, let alone one that most shows can do in a logical way that makes sense. From Ciri (Freya Allan) and Yennefer’s (Anya Chalotra) flashbacks to trying to keep Geralt’s romantic escapades straight, season 1 can be confusing at first glimpse.

Fortunately fans can look forward to a more linear timeline in season 2. “Honestly, I didn’t expect [the timeline] to be one of the most hotly-contested parts of the series,” Hissrich said on Reddit. “The people who hated it (the timeline) will luck out because S2 is structured differently. The story will be much more linear now that all three of the characters’ timelines have intersected.”

Lauren S. Hissrich shared photos on location for ‘The Witcher’ Season 2

Production on The Witcher Season 2 began in February 2020, but it was interrupted by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. The coronavirus has impacted several shows and films in production, leaving many fans wondering when new content will be able to be completed.

In an effort to provide encouragement and give fans something to look forward to, Hissrich shared a photo on April 10 to remind everyone that, once this pandemic is over, The Witcher will return. “The sun will rise again,” she said. “Until then, stay home and stay safe.” Production will resume once it’s safe for all parties involved to do so. Unfortunately, there’s no hard and fast timeline on when that will be.

When will fans get ‘The Witcher’ Season 2?

TV Guide reported that Netflix renewed the series for a second season in November 2019. At the time, season 2 was to be expected in 2021. Now, it’s not clear when cameras will start rolling again for The Witcher Season 2, and therefore impossible to predict when fans will be able to stream the new season.

What’s more, Hissrich told fans in a Reddit AMA: “We don’t yet have a target launch date for season two past 2021.” Many shows are likely in the same situation, but with the pandemic, it’s difficult to plan at this time.

New ‘Witcher’ content is coming

Fortunately for fans, it won’t be that long until Netflix releases some new Witcher content. The streaming platform announced an animated movie, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf. “The rumors are true, a new Witcher story is in the works!” a Netflix account tweeted. “The anime film, The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, will take us back to a new threat facing the Continent.”

It’s still unclear what the show will be about or which characters will be included in the narrative, but at least it’s something for fans to enjoy while they wait for season 2!
