‘The Woman in the House Across the Street From the Girl in the Window’: Creators Compare Cliffhanger Finale and Possibility of Season 2 to ‘Gone Girl’

'The Woman in the House' creators explain they know what happens after the cliffhanger that could work for a season 2. Rachel Ramras compared the ending to the mysterious finale of 'Gone Girl.'

Netflix‘s The Woman in the House Across the Street From the Girl in the Window starring Kristen Bell had an ending scene that left fans with an open-ended question. The season 1 cliffhanger also had a surprise cameo from a famed movie actor. The Woman in the House creators made a limited series, but it leaves the possibility of a season 2.

The series creators Rachel Ramras, Hugh Davidson, and Larry Dorf explain their reasoning for a cliffhanger ending. A season 2 of the series is not far-fetched. They compare their decisions to Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike’s Gone Girl.

What happened during the finale of the Netflix series?

By the last four minutes of the series, Anna has moved on from her involvement in the dizzying murder case. Sometime later, she reunites with her ex-husband and has another child. Audiences see her boarding a plane to have a girl’s weekend with Sloane. Fans may have assumed Anna put behind her reliance on wine behind her. In reality, she switches wine with vodka.

On the plane, she meets her seatmate, played by guest star Glenn Close. After Anna has a few too many mini bottles of vodka, she wakes up to use the restroom. She finds her seatmate dead in the bathroom. When she alerts the flight attendant, the body is nowhere to be found. Anna is once again stuck in a cycle of whether or not she witnessed a murder.

The cliffhanger ending would warrant a The Woman in the House Season 2. The creators of the Netflix series explain they wanted to have fun with the mysterious finale and compare it to the movie Gone Girl.

‘The Woman in the House’ creators wanted to end the series with a bang

Netflix’s The Woman in the House is tagged as a limited series, and its creators wrote the finale cliffhanger with that idea in mind. In an interview with Collider, Ramras also compared the cliffhanger ending to Gone Girl.

“It reminds me how, at the end of Gone Girl, she walks into the house, and you’re like, “Oh my God, what is their life about to become?” But you don’t see it. That doesn’t mean there couldn’t be another one, but it is of the genre to go out with a heart-pounding bang.”

The creators explain they know what happens after Anna finds the body, and the flight attendant does not believe her. To make sense of what to film, The Woman in the House creators did write a full scene. “So, as part of that process, pages do exist of what happens when that plane lands. We do have an idea,” said Dorf.

Ramras told Newsweek, “We did intend though, for this to be a limited series. And hopefully, the story that we told has a nice satisfying ending. We just couldn’t resist having this fun little cliffhanger at the end, especially, as Hugh pointed out, some of these books will then have an excerpt from the next book by that author in them. And so that was also a nod to these books.” But The Woman in the House creators do not give a firm answer if they would create a season 2.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Davidson explains the scene they wrote following the cliffhanger in The Woman in the House “could potentially be season 2.” They tease it could happen if the series is well received. While the creators know what happens to Anna after the finale, Kristen Bell does not.

Bell told Pop Sugar, “I need to call the writers before I answer that. I have no idea.” Along with fans, Bell also hopes to see Anna’s story continue. Bell wants Anna to solve the cliffhanger ending murder within one episode and move on to other murders, “like murders follow my character around.”

As The Woman in the House takes over Netflix’s Top 10, fans will have to wait and see if a new season will be confirmed.
