Cassie’s death is one of the show’s most iconic storylines and impacts the show to this day

Cassie Newman, the daughter of Sharon and Nick Newman, died on-screen in 2007. Grimes had played the character for over 10 years. The character’s death had reverberating impacts across the show and its canvas. Cassie’s death is arguably one of the biggest storylines in the show’s 47-year history.

Grimes returned numerous times after the character’s death as a ghost, appearing multiple times up until 2014. The same year, she debuted as a new character, Mariah Copeland. This character was written as the antithesis of Cassie. Mariah was initially hired by Nick’s father, Victor, to gaslight Sharon. However, it is eventually revealed that Mariah is actually the secret daughter of Sharon and is Cassie’s twin who was stolen at birth. Mariah was first depicted as villainous, but like Cassie, she is now most beloved on the show and is praised for being a groundbreaking character.

Here’s what the main actors involved in the story say about it today

In an interview this with Michael Fairman TV, Case, Grimes and Morrow discussed the episode in which Cassie dies. As the show is still airing old episodes due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic’s setbacks, the one in which Cassie passed away was one of the recently featured. The episode was a part of the show’s themed week focusing on the Newman family.

“I didn’t see the depth of what we were trying to do. But, like I said, you feel it later on, you feel how it touched different people,” said Morrow, as reported by Daytime Confidential. “It was without a doubt the work I’m most proud of and also the most sad about. I remember when were were shooting it, you couldn’t’ hear a pin drop on a very noisy soundstage.

On the episode, Case said, “I thought the editing was amazing; the lighting, everything, was so beautifully done. I loved the slow-mo. I loved when Joshua was signing, I loved how that was framed. It just captured everything so beautifully.”

The actress also revealed that Melody Thomas Scott, who portrays Nikki Newman, also had a crucial role in the scene which not many people may know about. “I think Melody told me that she either assisted or had a lot to say about the editing,” explained Case. She got involved; she was so moved by the storyline, of course all of us were, and she was partially involved in the edit.”
