With the Kevin-centered (Justin Hartley) episode on This Is Us tonight, we find ourselves wondering what led up to these moments between him and Sophie (Alexandra Breckenridge). Let’s take a look at everything in the series so far that we know about the relationship between Kevin and Sophie

Kevin and Sophie met through Kate at age 10

Kevin’s (Parker Bates) sister, Kate (Mackenzie Hancsicsak), was best friends with Sophie (Sophia Coto) as a child. Back in season 1, we met young Sophie when the big three had their tenth birthday party. Sophie leaves Kate’s area of the party to hang out with Kevin. From that point forward, the two were close.

The pair were inseparable throughout childhood and high school

In 1992 the two attend a school dance together. Kevin ropes a reluctant Sophie into a prank on the principal, and they eventually have their first kiss.

On an eighth-grade class trip to New York City, the pair shared a kiss at a small diner, which Kevin returns to try to win back Sophie’s heart in season 1.

In 1998, Sophie (Amanda Leighton) and Kevin (Logan Shroyer) graduated from high school and moved together to New York City. While in the city, they frequent that same diner and sit in the same booth.

“Let me remember you at 10 or 17 or 20. Just let me remember you when it was good,” an older Sophie tells Kevin.

Although we haven’t seen their entire history from 10 to 20 years old, we know that they were happy and in love throughout that decade.

Kevin and Sophie were married at 18-years-old on a whim

To Kevin’s family’s dismay, he marries Sophie without telling anyone. After hearing the news, Rebecca invites them over for a dinner party. It’s during that evening that we find out the details about the spur of the moment wedding.

He arrives at Rebecca’s (Mandy Moore) new home carrying Sophie over the threshold. They refer to each other as “husband” and “wife,” and then Kevin tells the story of their engagement and wedding.

He proposed to Sophie after getting several clear signs. He was walking through the streets of New York City when he walked by a theater playing their favorite movie, The Princess Bride. At the same time, church bells began ringing across the street, and a vendor selling bracelets walked by. That’s when Kevin knew he “couldn’t wait another second” to start their lives together.

The two divorced after only a few years of marriage

We found out late in season 1 that Sophie and Kevin divorced because the actor cheated on her, presumably while in Los Angeles. The pair decided together for him to go to L.A. to work on his acting career and Sophie to stay in NYC. However, the decision did not go as planned because they divorced sometime after.

They gave it a second-try 12 years later—it didn’t work out

36-year-old Kevin professes his love to Sophie at the end of season 1, and she agrees to meet him at their diner. The actor waits in their favorite booth, with her favorite dish, lava fries. The food wins her over, and they end up talking. After several episodes of Kevin begging and a few plates of lava fries later, the two end up back together.

The rekindled relationship is short-lived. Kevin falls more dangerously into alcoholism and an addiction to pain medication. Their relationship begins to deteriorate and he ends up breaking it off with Sophie.

Kevin goes to see Sophie for a third-try, but she’s engaged

Kevin moves on to a new relationship, with Zoe (Melanie Liburd), but it comes to a head after he finds out that she does not want to have kids. He goes to talk to Sophie but finds out that she’s engaged.

The two have a friendly chat at a coffee shop where his ex-wife tells him that the reason he’s not used to making decisions is because he always gets what he wants anyway.

“Decide what you want. You always get it,” Sophie gives Kevin a last bit of advice.

At that point, Kevin tries to make it work with Zoe, but ultimately he realizes that he does want children and cannot stay with her.

Is Kevin going to ask for that third-try once again?

In tonight’s episode, Kevin goes to Pittsburgh to support Sophie after her mother dies. He brings her a box of donuts—and we notice a theme of Kevin winning over her heart with food.

The episode is full of flashbacks to Kevin and Sophie’s happy times together. However, we still do not get our answers regarding whether or not Sophie is Kevin’s mystery fiance in the future.
