Things are getting more intense for the big three on This Is Us. The series continued on Tuesday, Feb. 25, with some answers around Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Toby’s (Chris Sullivan) relationship.

At least for now, things are looking up for the couple’s marriage — which was on the rocks most of this season. However, fans have a new theory regarding why we still have not seen Kate in a distant future flash forward.

In This Is Us season 4, episode 15, Kate returns home from her trip, and Toby tries to apologize with another grand romantic gesture. He is known for these moves as a way to make things right in their relationship.

Initially, Toby does not impress Kate with his transformation of their garage into a music studio for her. However, after some wisdom from her best friend, Madison (Caitlin Thompson), Kate gives it another try with Toby.

He takes her out to the garage again and shows her how he also added a spot for baby Jack to play music. The couple finally makes up, and viewers at home let out a massive sigh of relief.

However, in the next moments, we watch a heartwarming flash-forward of Jack growing up in the studio. The garage is instrumental in their son becoming a successful musician. It’s very moving until fans point out that Kate was missing from the flash-forwards as Jack grew up.

‘This Is Us’ fans predict that Kate will have Alzheimer’s like her mother, Rebecca (Mandy Moore)

Fans initially thought that Kate and Toby get a divorce in the distant future, and that’s why we see an older Toby but not Kate. However, after episode 15, they have a new theory.

“Ok, seeing how this music studio changed Jack’s life ENTIRELY — I’m starting to think it isn’t divorce, but Kate is legit passed away in the future,” one fan wrote on Reddit.

Other viewers speculate that she dies, but also has the same genetic disease as Rebecca.

“Maybe Kate inherited Rebecca’s Alzheimer’s, and she’s in some sort of her own assisted living, and Toby couldn’t handle it and had a bit of a breakdown,” another viewer added.

During season 4, episode 15, viewers also watched as Rebecca received an official diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease, so they are quick to guess that Kate might have it too.

When will we find out what happens to Kate on ‘This Is Us’ in the distant future?

The producers gave some insight into what is to come in upcoming episodes during an interview with Entertainment Weekly. Viewers can breathe easy about Kate and Toby’s relationship for the time being.

“I think Kate and Toby have reached a really, really good place and worked their way through this immediate hurdle of Toby struggling to get on board to being the father of a blind son,” said This Is Us producer Isaac Aptaker to EW.

While we are delighted that their marriage is out of the woods, we are worried about Kate in the future. Now, she is one of the only ones we have not seen in a flash forward.

“We’re not doing much more distant future this season, so I think people are going to have to wait a little longer to find out what’s up with Kate,” Aptaker revealed.

It looks like we won’t see Kate in the future until at least season 5 of This Is Us.
