On Tuesday, Jan. 21, This Is Us Season 4 rolled out its first episode of the Big Three trilogy. Fans watched as Randall (Sterling K. Brown) struggled with his anxiety. And when the NBC drama returns, Kevin (Justin Hartley) will take the spotlight. However, after watching Randall and Kevin’s phone call in “A Hell of a Week: Part One,” viewers are on the edge of their seats to find out what happens in Kate’s (Chrissy Metz) episode. So what happened to Kate in This Is Us? Get ready, because we’re going to learn a lot more about teenage Kate’s (Hannah Zeile) past.

What happened to Kate in ‘This Is Us’ Season 4 Episode 11?

As mentioned, This Is Us Season 4 Episode 11 delved into Randall’s mental health, anxiety, and aversions to seek out help. Towards the start of the episode, college-aged Randall is home and he starts talking to Rebecca (Mandy Moore) about his intense nightmares. But just as they are about to dive into the subject, Kate walks by and she’s having an argument with someone on the phone.

“Why are you so mad? Did I do something wrong?” Kate says. She then reveals she is speaking with her boyfriend, Marc (Austin Abrams).

Randall and Rebecca stare at Kate with concern. But Kate shrugs it off and walks away. Meanwhile, teenage Kevin (Logan Shroyer) and Sophie (Amanda Leighton) arrive at the house for Rebecca’s birthday dinner later that evening. Kate briefly greets them and closes herself off in her room. And when Randall explains Kate is on the phone with Marc, Kevin replies, “She’s still dating that greaseball?” Same, Kevin, same.

Later in the episode, Beth (Rachel Hilson) urges Randall to go to therapy for his nightmares. Beth shares her experience and tells him the same thing happened to her after her father died. But seeking therapy helped give her control. And now, the dreams of her father are happy.

Even after his conversation with Beth, Randall doesn’t want to go to therapy. However, he agrees to attend a grief group meeting. But just as Beth and Randall are about to leave for the grief group — which is supposed to take place before Rebecca’s birthday dinner — Kevin calls.

“Mom canceled her birthday dinner,” Kevin says. “Something’s wrong with Kate. I’ll explain in the car. Just be ready in 20. We’re coming to pick you up.”

Now, every member of the Pearson family appears panicked. Kevin is a bit frazzled when speaking with Randall. Meanwhile, Rebecca is seen walking with purpose, searching for her coat and purse. Then after the call, Randall jumps right into hero mode, and the episode doesn’t return to this timeline.

The Kate-centric trilogy episode in ‘This Is Us’ Season 4 will probably involve Marc

This Is Us fans will have to hold on tight. It seems we won’t get all the answers about what’s going on with Kate when the NBC drama returns. The next all-new episode will feature Kevin. However, the following episode will surround Kate’s storyline. And according to TVLine, everyone will learn more about what happened to Kate in the thirteenth episode, titled “Mom.”

Then when teasing the episode, This Is Us executive producer, Elizabeth Berger, told the publication that the Pearson family — and viewers — will uncover more details about Marc’s true nature.

“I think people can tell by now that Marc is not the greatest guy and probably is not the guy that Kate should be with,” Berger said. “We are definitely going to see things start to come to a head in that relationship in a way where potentially the family is going to really have to rally behind Kate and step in and say, ‘Perhaps this is not the guy you belong with.’”

And when speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Berger echoed her statement, reinforcing how strongly the Pearson family oppose Marc’s presence in Kate’s life.

“We will see it reach a breaking point where it is time for family to get involved and say, ‘Enough is enough here,’” Berger said.

For now, This Is Us fans don’t know what’s going on between Kate and Marc. But when speaking with Entertainment Weekly in November 2019, Berger and executive producer Isaac Aptaker hinted that whatever happens has lasting effects on Kate.

“It definitely goes to an unhealthy place that’s going to make a real impact on Kate and stay with her over the years,” Aptaker said.

Then Berger reminded viewers “Kate is now 39 years old and a highly functioning woman, so she got out of the relationship somewhat unscathed in the long run” That said, Kate’s relationship with Marc will still leave “serious emotional wounds.”
