This Is Us star Mandy Moore (Rebecca Pearson) says the season 5 premiere is “spectacular” and “super ambitious.” But that isn’t the only reason why you should be excited about the two-hour event.

In October, the Pearson family will return to NBC with the Big Three’s 40th birthday celebration. And as always, fans are expecting a big twist by the end of the first episode. Then in a recent interview, Moore teased the new storyline to watch out for in the This Is Us Season 5 premiere. And apparently, it’s something completely unexpected.

Back in July, Moore promised the upcoming This Is Us premiere would be worth the wait.

“I know it’s super ambitious, like our show always is,” Moore told TV Insider of the first two episodes. “I am biased. But I feel like it keeps getting better and better. I marvel at how extraordinary our writers are, and how innovative and inventive they are. I am excited.”

Now, the actor has a few more teasers. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly published on Oct. 21, Moore hinted at a new story in the This Is Us Season 5 premiere that will leave viewers stunned.

“It’s a part of this family’s story that I had just never thought about before,” Moore said. “Because you maybe feel like, ‘Oh, what’s the story? There is no story there.’ But there’s a story there.”

At this point, Moore’s remarks about the This Is Us Season 5 premiere could be about anything. There are plenty of Pearson family storylines that have yet to be explored. But in a separate interview with Entertainment Weekly, creator Dan Fogelman confirmed the two-hour premiere will feature a timeline we haven’t really seen before.

Of course, we already know the season premiere will cover Kate (Chrissy Metz), Kevin (Justin Hartley), and Randall’s (Sterling K. Brown) 40th birthday. But Fogelman confirmed the new episode will also highlight the Big Three’s first.

Meanwhile, the creator teased the This Is Us premiere, noting the first episode “feels really big.”

“We’re always conscious to come out of the gates swinging a little bit and remind people, ‘Oh yeah, this show’s still on and we’re still here,’” Fogelman said. “I’m very proud of what we’re trying to undertake.”

When will ‘This Is Us’ return to NBC with the season 5 premiere?

Clearly, the This Is Us team has faith in the season 5 premiere. But given its history and everything that happened in the fourth season finale, it’s highly likely the NBC drama will not disappoint.

When we said goodbye to the Pearson family in March, Randall and Kevin got into the fight of the century. Both parties said things that will be difficult to come back to. Meanwhile, Randall has been struggling with his mental health and Kevin found out he’s having twins with Madison (Caitlin Thompson)

The return of This Is Us will also reveal what happened to Rebecca. In the finale, the Pearson matriarch revealed she would go to St. Louis for the Alzheimer’s clinical trial. But we’ll see her final decision. Then Kate and Toby (Chris Sullivan) decided to adopt. However, both actors recently indicated their characters may not be ready for another child just yet.

For now, fans will have to wait and see what happens on the This Is Us Season 5 premiere. But hopefully, it will be as “spectacular” as Moore and Fogelman suggest. So get ready. The season starts on Tuesday, Oct. 27, at 9 p.m. ET. New episodes will also be available to watch on Hulu the following Wednesday.
