The Pearson family is ready for a new beginning when This Is Us returns to NBC for its two-hour season 5 premiere. When the drama wrapped its fourth cycle, fans wondered where the show would be headed next. Now, the network has officially dropped its first This Is Us Season 5 promo, and it teases a few moments when Randall (Sterling K. Brown), Kevin (Justin Hartley), and Kate (Chrissy Metz) turn 40.

The ‘This Is Us’ Season 5 promo trailer highlights moments from Kate, Kevin, and Randall’s 40th birthday

The new This Is Us Season 5 promo is filled with bite-sized moments that will surely get fans excited about the premiere. Rebecca (Mandy Moore) kicks off the trailer, as she tells teenage Kate (Hannah Zeile) it’s time to “start a new chapter.”

Then preview cuts to scenes from the present-day storyline. Randall is seen blowing out candles for his 40th. But, as we know from the fall finale flash-forward, he isn’t spending his birthday with Kate and Kevin. Instead, he’s only celebrating with his wife and children.

Kevin is then spotted in a mask. This Is Us will cover the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in the new season. The promo jumps to a shot of Kate and Toby (Chris Sullivan). The couple, who decided they were going to adopt in season 4, are both all smiles.

Then the trailer flashes to Kevin as he cradles Madison’s (Caitlin Thompson) stomach, as she’s pregnant with twins. Kevin is also wearing the same shirt he wore during his 40th birthday. So it’s even more likely Madison could be the pregnant fiancée from the season 4 flash-forward.

Meanwhile, the This Is Us Season 5 preview doesn’t let fans forget about the fight between Kevin and Randall. Kevin tells his brother, “The worst thing that ever happened to me was the day they brought you home.”

However, the promo reminded fans, “Every family deserves a new beginning.” Then a few shots of the main cast are highlighted, including one of young Rebecca and Jack (Milo Ventimiglia).

The trailer ends with Kevin opening the cabin door to Randall standing outside. All the decorations behind Kevin also indicate it’s still the Big Three’s 40th birthday. But despite the celebration, the moment is still tense.

The This Is Us Season 5 premiere airs Tuesday, Oct. 27, on NBC. So hopefully, the promo will be able to tie fans over until then. But regardless, creator Dan Fogelman recently teased what’s to come during an interview with TV Insider. Fogelman revealed Kevin and Randall’s fight won’t be an easy fix. So it seems unlikely their reunion in the premiere will end the feud.

“This isn’t the type of fight that you clap your hands and say, ‘Well, that was a weird one’ and come back from it immediately,” he said. “It will take a lot to recover.”

Meanwhile, fans will find out Kate’s reaction to Madison’s baby news as well as Rebecca’s final decision on the Alzheimer’s clinical trial. There will also be a flashback featuring Rebecca and Jack.

“It will give a lot of context to their day before [the kids’] birth,” Fogelman said.

No matter what happens when This Is Us comes back to NBC, the recent promo proves the season 5 premiere will be worth the wait. So prepare the tissues now, because this one’s going to be emotional.
