It’s been a hot minute since we last checked in with the Pearson family. But the This Is Us Season 5 premiere is finally on its way. NBC recently announced the new season will be released sooner than originally anticipated. Then to add to the excitement, Sterling K. Brown, who plays Randall, shared his thoughts on the new season. And apparently, it’s going to be “outstanding.”

The ‘This Is Us’ Season 5 premiere date

In August 2020, NBC revealed the This Is Us Season 5 premiere would be released in November. But the network recently moved up the new season by two weeks. Now, fans get to watch new episodes starting Tuesday, Oct. 27. The premiere will also be two-hours long.

Meanwhile, the This Is Us cast and crew began production on Thursday, Sept. 24. Creator Dan Fogelman posted a photo of Mandy Moore (Rebecca) and Milo Ventimiglia (Jack) on the first day back on set and highlighted the safety protocols while filming during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

“A 2020 television sex scene,” Fogelman wrote in the caption. “We’re back. #ThisIsUs.”

Then in an interview with The Talk, Brown opened up about going back to work at this time. “I look forward to telling the story of the Pearsons with these people that I love, that have become my family over the past four years,” he said. “It’s exciting, very exciting.”

As This Is Us fans patiently wait for the new season, some cast members have already teased what’s coming next when the show returns. In an interview with the LA Times in August, Brown hinted the NBC series would come “back with a bang.” Then when speaking with People in September, the actor teased the upcoming premiere.

“Our first two episodes are outstanding,” Brown said. “As long as we, as actors, are able to execute what the writing has provided us an opportunity to do. I think our fans will be very, very, very happy.”

Of course, Brown’s comments may not come as much of a surprise. Viewers are accustomed to mild-blowing premieres — and finales. And even Mandy Moore (Rebecca) was impressed by the first two episodes, noting they were proof the show was just “getting better and better.”

“I marvel at how extraordinary our writers are, and how innovative and inventive they are,” she said.

In the above interview with the LA Times, Brown was asked whether current events — such as the pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement — would be addressed in This Is Us Season 5. At the time, Brown wasn’t able to give away any details. But the actor suggested the writers wanted to cover the topics.

“I can tell you that the world will be reflected in our show,” Brown said. “I won’t go into the details. But it is in the forefront of the show’s consciousness that the times in which we are living in are extraordinary. And[Dan Fogelman] took it upon himself to say, ‘I think that we can help people through this time by showing them how the Pearsons are dealing with it.’”

Now, it seems This Is Us Season 5 will cover both topics. Fogelman confirmed the show will “attack things head-on” in regards to the global pandemic. Then when speaking with People, Brown hinted how This Is Us will address the Black Lives Matter movement through Randall’s storyline.

“It was as huge from a writer’s perspective as it was from mine,” Brown said. “I think Randall offers such a unique perspective. Being a Black man raised in a white family, there’s a very specific prism through which he sees the world. And I think the writers have captured it brilliantly.”
