This Is Us fans know you can take the sourest lemon life has to offer and turn it into something resembling lemonade. Now, the NBC drama has done just that with 2020. In late August, the This Is Us Season 5 premiere date was announced for the fall season. Then a few weeks later, the network updated fans on the forthcoming release. And it’s definitely something to celebrate.

When will ‘This Is Us’ Season 5 premiere be released on NBC in 2020?

When the This Is Us Season 5 release date was announced in August, NBC originally scheduled new episodes to resume on Tuesday, Nov. 10. Then on Sept. 23, Deadline revealed the two-hour premiere will be moved up by two weeks. So now, the fifth season will start airing on Oct. 27, the Tuesday ahead of Election Day.

Meanwhile, the This Is Us cast took to social media to advertise the new date.

“Y’all want some good news? I think we could use a little good news, yeah? #ThisIsUs is back two weeks earlier! And yeah…it’s still a 2 hour season premiere,” Sterling K. Brown wrote on Twitter. “Wanted you to have something to talk about while you’re casting your ballot. See you in 33 days!”

Then Susan Kelechi Watson wrote, “Back on set TODAY so that we can bring you some R&B EARLY!!!! That’s right!!! We got a new premiere date, which means you’ll be seeing us sooner than you thought.”

The ‘This Is Us’ cast and creator on the season 5 premiere

Although the This Is Us Season 5 premiere has been moved up by two weeks, the NBC drama will still be released a month later than usual. Typically, new episodes resume in late September. But the cast and crew just started production on Sept. 24 due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. So the delay isn’t exactly much of a surprise.

That said, it seems This Is Us Season 5 will be worth the wait. Ever since the fourth season finale, the team has been hyping up the show’s return. Back in March, Fogelman told The Hollywood Reporter the fifth season premiere was already written. Then a few months later, Mandy Moore teased another extraordinary start.

“I know that Dan has written the first two episodes of the season,” Moore told TVLine. “I know it’s super ambitious, like our show always is.”

In September, Brown echoed his co-star’s comments about the This Is Us Season 5 premiere. “Our first two episodes are outstanding,” he told People. “As long as we, as actors, are able to execute what the writing has provided us an opportunity to do, I think our fans will be very, very, very happy.”

Meanwhile, Fogelman hinted the new season will cover the pandemic as well as the Black Lives Matter movement. But even so, the current events will not impact the endgame of the show. In August: Fogelman told Entertainment Weekly:

We have a carefully crafted plan through six seasons of the television show that hundreds of people have now devoted for four-plus years of their lives executing. What’s happening in the world may shift the details of how things happen. But the big moves continue to happen — and actually potentially heighten and make better the television show then maybe some of our initial plans, because that’s our job.

Whatever happens when This Is Us Season 5 makes its debut in October, it’s clear the cast believes in the story ahead. So stay tuned.
