In This Is Us Season 6 Episode 3, “Four Fathers,” the NBC series drops in on Jack Damon while he cooks on the Big Green Egg with Lucy by his side. Then the show reveals that Jack Jr.’s first memory involves the smoker, and it seems like there was a traumatic accident.

Lucy suggests that the Big Green Egg plays a role in Toby and Kate’s split because of an incident that leaves Jack Damon with a scar on his forehead.

“You know, you don’t need to keep using that thing,” Lucy says to Jack. “It’s like the literal symbol of the day your mom and dad’s marriage blew up. Besides, that day almost permanently deformed that near-perfect face of yours.”

Nevertheless, Jack says he keeps the smoker because of the delicious foods it makes.

Following This Is Us Season 6 Episode 3, writers Casey Johnson and David Windsor teased where the new storyline is headed for Jack Jr., Kate, and Toby. When speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Johnson and Windsor noted that the moment “has stayed with Jack” and will eventually lead “to a bigger story line in a future episode.”

Meanwhile, Windsor teased the mystery even further in an interview with People

“We liked the mystery of setting up that Big Green Egg with them that comes back to play at the end of the episode,” the TIU writer said. “We may come back to that storyline a little bit and find out a little bit more information about whatever that injury was that he suffered, however that went down and sort of setting up the mystery of that for the show.”

Why ‘This Is Us’ fans shouldn’t worry about the new story (too much)

Although Jack’s first memory results in an injury (and Toby’s and Kate’s divorce), This Is Us fans don’t have to worry about Lucy’s wording in episode 3. Given the Pearsons’ terrible luck with cooking appliances, some viewers have been wondering whether the upcoming moment will actually involve an explosion resulting in someone’s death. But in the above interview with Entertainment Weekly, Johnson reassured fans wondering whether Kate will die.

“Well, I think we can assure everyone that the smoker doesn’t explode. That’s not what happened,” the writer said. “The only thing that happens in the future with the smoker is that it makes delicious meat that everyone enjoys.”

Meanwhile, Windsor confirmed that whatever happens in the future on This Is Us Season 6, Jack Jr.’s painful memory helps shape the character moving forward.

“Even though it was difficult and literally painful for him, it still had purpose and shaped his life in a way,” Windsor said. “Whatever that moment is served a purpose in his life.”
