Many This Is Us fans have been trying to figure out why Kate (Chrissy Metz) and Toby (Chris Sullivan) divorce in the future. The sixth and final season has dropped a few clues about the upcoming breakup. But it doesn’t look like viewers have to be afraid of a big blowup between the two beloved characters. This Is Us teased something big happened to Kate and Toby long before season 6. Previously, Toby was seen in a flash-forward without a wedding ring. He also spoke with the Pearson family, and Kate was nowhere to be seen. Thus, many fans were left to wonder whether the couple divorced or Kate was dead.

That said, the This Is Us Season 5 finale finally revealed that Kate eventually marries her co-worker, Phillip (Chris Geere) after splitting with Toby. Meanwhile, This Is Us Season 6 dropped more clues about Toby and Kate’s divorce

Currently, the characters are struggling because Toby works in San Francisco multiple days a week while Kate still lives in LA with the kids. In the future, Jack Damon (Blake Stadnik) and his wife, Lucy (Auden Thornton), also hint that the Big Green Egg Smoker is a symbol of the day Kate and Toby break up. But the real reason for the split has yet to be determined.

Although it seems Kate and Toby’s marriage will end because of a big event in This Is Us Season 6, Metz assured fans that the reason for the divorce isn’t explosive. When speaking with Us Weekly in January 2022, the actor revealed that viewers will see the couple grow apart.

“People grow, and they grow in different ways. They take different journeys,” Metz said. “It’s so hard not to imagine them together. … But we’ll come to find that neither Toby or Kate are wrong or right. They’re sort of just growing apart.”

The This Is Us star also hinted that fans will “absolutely” watch Kate and Toby successfully co-parent baby Jack and Hailey in the future. But ultimately, the end of the relationship won’t be as terrible as some viewers might think.

“You know, we always see these very tumultuous endings of relationships, and we’re gonna see that these are two people that love each other desperately. But just aren’t meant to be together forever,” Metz said. “It doesn’t have to be terrible all of the time. You can understand each other’s perspectives.”
