Kate and Toby briefly reconnected during ‘This Is Us’ Season 6 Episode 16

During This Is Us Season 6 Episode 16, Kate (Chrissy Metz) called her ex-husband Toby (Chris Sullivan) to check on the kids after attempting to discuss Rebecca’s (Mandy Moore) next steps with her brothers.

However, the initial discussion didn’t go that well as Randall (Sterling K. Brown) immediately suggested their mother move in with him.

She informed Toby that Rebecca’s health is declining as she began yelling for Miguel (Jon Huertas), forgetting that he had died. Therefore, the siblings are trying to figure out what they should do. However, Toby pointed out that the decision was up to her as Rebecca appointed her as guardian.

After getting “permission to overstep,” he called his ex a “baller” but pointed out that she “becomes an unsteady version” of herself in the presence of her brothers. He encouraged her by reminding her that Rebecca chose her for a reason before jokingly asking if they should reunite.

Chrissy Metz thinks Toby’ understands’ ex-wife Kate differently than anyone else

Following the May 10th episode, titled “The End Is Here,” Metz spoke to People about Kate and Toby’s connection.

She pointed out that her character’s ex-husband knows her “in a different way” than her brothers or parents. The actor continued, noting Toby has watched her as she navigated different situations that no one else has, where her decisions got “bulldozed” or others have doubted her choices.

“But he knows who she really is, and she’s never had that confidence to speak up,” she claimed.

The actor called their conversation on the phone “really beautiful and tender,” adding, “when you love somebody, you always love them.” Metz closed by noting him supporting her “from afar is just very telling of their relationship and the way he understands her.”

Metz and Mandy Moore had strong reactions after reading ‘This Is Us’ penultimate episode

The cast of This Is Us discussed the final season during an April 2022 panel at the PaleyFest. After reading the penultimate episode, Metz admitted she had a visceral reaction, claiming, “I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t catch my breath.”

The actor reportedly had a similar response after filming season 6, episode 9’s “The Hill,” which showed the end of their marriage. According to E! News, Metz became “physically ill” after shooting the scenes for the March 22 episode.

Other cast members also had strong reactions after reading the script for the penultimate. For example, Mandy Moore, who portrays the Pearson matriarch Rebecca, claimed it caused her to “throw up.” Also, during the PaleyFest, writer Dan Fogelman confirmed he finished writing the finale.

Actor Milo Ventimiglia, who portrays the late patriarch of the family, Jack, reported that Fogelman texted him the night before the festival and announced that he had officially completed the script. However, it didn’t seem as though the cast hadn’t filmed the finale as of the PaleyFest because Moore claimed that she hadn’t read it yet in a different interview. This Is Us penultimate episode airs Tuesday, May 17, at 8/7c on NBC.
