‘This Is Us’ Season 6 Episode 4 preview hints Jack and Marilyn had a complicated relationship

At the end of This Is Us Season 6 Episode 3, “Four Fathers,” Jack gets a phone call revealing his mom died. Of course, fans don’t know much about Marilyn. She was in an abusive relationship with Jack’s alcoholic father, Stanley (Peter Onorati). Jack also helped Marilyn move out, and he cut ties with his dad.

That said, the This Is Us Season 6 Episode 4 preview suggests Jack didn’t remain close with his mother throughout the years. In the promo trailer, Jack tells Rebecca (Mandy Moore) that he’s “got a funeral to plan and a lifetime of loose ends to tie up.” Then when he drives up to his mom’s house, one of her friends points out that Jack hasn’t visited in 13 years. But despite this, another friend reveals how important Jack was to Marilyn.

“Nothing was more important to her than your Sunday calls,” the friend says to the Pearson patriarch. “You’re her hero, Jack.”

As the trailer for This Is Us Season 6 Episode 4 continues, Jack calls Rebecca on the phone and reveals that he has to write a eulogy for the funeral. Then Rebecca asks her husband what he’s going to say. But how does he find the words to say goodbye when he still has so many loose ends to tie up? It’s clear Jack doesn’t know.

The This Is Us promo jumps ahead to the funeral, and Jack looks at the crowd filled with his mom’s friends while giving his eulogy. But when he opens his mouth, nothing comes out. He’s speechless.

In the last episode of This Is Us, fans watched the Pearson patriarch jump right into action as Super Dad for Randall, Kevin, and Kate. But it looks like Jack’s the one who needs some saving this time around.
