The British royal family has access to some jaw-dropping pieces of jewelry. Queen Elizabeth II’s crown worth millions of dollars is just one piece in a much larger collection. What’s the story behind the Spencer Tiara? Diana’s grandmother, Lady Cynthia Hamilton, received it as a wedding gift when she married the 7th Earl Spencer in 1919.

Created out of other diamond pieces, the Spencer Tiara features tulips, scrolls, and stars. There’s no official price tag on the dazzling piece. However, it’s considered to be among the most valuable royal tiaras.

Before Diana’s royal wedding, people couldn’t help but wonder what tiara she’d select to wear down the aisle at St. Paul’s Cathedral. Instead of wearing one on loan from the queen, Diana chose something a little closer to home.

When she wed Chares on July 29, 1981, Diana did so wearing the Spencer Tiara. It accented her gown designed by David and Elizabeth Emanuel.

The detailed gown, made of 10,000 pearls and sequins, plus Diana’s incredible 25-foot train and the Spencer Tiara made for an iconic look.

After her instantly iconic royal wedding outfit, Diana stunned in the Spencer Tiara many times. In her years as a royal, Diana attended many functions that meant wearing dazzling tiaras. Although tiaras are sometimes painful to wear, that doesn’t keep royal women from wearing them.

… And on many other occasions

The opening of Parliament, a ceremonial occasion that requires royals to go all out, Diana didn’t disappoint. She wore the Spencer Tiara as she arrived with her mother-in-law, the queen.

During an official royal tour of Australia, Diana pulled out all the stops. Wearing the Spencer Tiara and a matching necklace and earrings, she looked every bit a princess.

The start of a new decade didn’t slow down the Spencer Tiara’s appearances on Diana’s head. She wore it to a banquet during an Italian state visit in 1990.

And yet again a few years later attending a dinner at The Dorchester hotel.
