After over one year of speculation, Tom Bergeron has finally confirmed his firing from Dancing With the Stars. In 2020, Bergeron shared he would not return to the show he hosted for 28 seasons. Since 2005, he moved the live show forward, tamed flaring tempers, and even rescued a celebrity or two. However, he was not asked back for season 29 of the series. ABC replaced him with Tyra Banks.
In 2020, Tom Bergeron claimed ‘DWTS’ would ‘go on without me’
In a Twitter statement posted on July 13, 2020, Bergeron said he would not return as host of the long-running dance competition series.
He wrote, “Just informed Dancing ABC will be continuing without me. It’s been an incredible 15-year run and the most unexpected gift of my career. I’m grateful for that and for the lifelong friendships made. That said, now what am I supposed to do with all of these glitter masks?”
Just days later, ABC revealed that Tyra Banks would replace both Bergeron and his co-host, Erin Andrews.
As a result, fans took to social media to voice their displeasure at Bergeron’s exit from the show.
Viewers claimed they would not watch season 29 of Dancing With the Stars unless Bergeron was rehired. Furthermore, ratings reportedly went down during Banks’s first season.
All things considered, fans remained hopeful Bergeron would return to the series.
Tom confirms his firing from the series
In an interview with Bob Saget for his podcast Bob Saget’s Here For You, Bergeron spoke about his experience on Dancing With the Stars.
A fan questioned Bergeron, “Tom, why did you leave DWTS? Your replacement is horrible. I will not watch the show until you return. I’m sure I’m not the only one that wants you back.”
In order to put rumors to rest once and for all, Bergeron tweeted the following statement.
“I had to leave. It’s really awkward if one sticks around after being fired.”
Fans reacted to Tom’s surprising admission
Fans of the television personality reacted expressly to his surprising admission.
Bergeron has had a 40-year television career as an actor and host of such shows as America’s Funniest Home Videos, and Hollywood Squares.
“Show is lost without you. You were Dancing With The Stars. Their loss,” penned one Twitter user.
“LOL! I really miss your sense of humor. With attention to detail, you will always be the perfect fit for DWTS,” claims a second fan.
“Makes me so sad. I think you know we all love you,” wrote a third follower.
“You’re missed,” remarked a fourth viewer.
Dancing With the Stars airs Mondays at 8 p.m. EST on ABC.
