The Transformers live-action film franchise has taken a beating from critics over the years, but that hasn’t stopped fans from flocking to see the movies. After Michael Bay capped things off with The Last Knight, director Travis Knight successfully launched the spinoff Bumblebee, a prequel.

Fans haven’t seen an inkling of Transformers since 2018, but Transformers: Rise of the Beasts was next up in the series. However, the film hit a snag.

New ‘Transformers’ film delayed to 2023

Originally slated for a 2022 release, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts will now drop in June 2023. According to Deadline, Paramount Studios pushed the date back one year and Star Trek moves from June 2023 to December 2023.

Peter Cullen returns as Optimus Prime, but the cast also includes Ron Perlman, Anthony Ramos, Luna Lauren Valez, and Dominque Fishback. Ramos plays a military man who’s an expert in technology, while Fishback’s character studies ancient relics. Perlman plays Optimus Primal.

What’s ‘Transformers: Rise of the Beasts’ about?

Production recently wrapped on the film directed by Steven Caple Jr. According to the logline from Paramount Studios, the movie will travel back in time to the ‘90s.

Returning to the action and spectacle that first captured moviegoers around the world 14 years ago with the original Transformers, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts will take audiences on a ‘90s globetrotting adventure and introduce the Maximals, Predacons, and Terrorcons to the existing battle on earth between Autobots and Decepticons.

During a press event in June (via ComingSoon.net), Caple teased what fans can expect in the new film.

“It has classic music and there’s a certain energy to the 90s that I’m looking forward to capture. Like we’ve seen it on screen very few times, sometimes little hokey, you play into it too much, but I think there’s a level of realness that I could bring to it,” he said. “There’s a level of grit, but grit that I kinda naturally default to, that we can like really make pop, you know, in terms of our world and the Autobots stepping into the 90s and all the callbacks and fun we can sort of play with there in that era.”

‘Rise of the Beasts’ will travel too

Parts of the movie take place in Brooklyn, New York, and in Peru. With Predacons and Maximals in the story, there’s bound to be a visit — or at least an origin — in Cybertron. They’re warring factions descended from the Decepticons and Autobots, respectively. And once upon a time, the Autobots weren’t the universe’s greatest heroes.

Fans hope Rise of the Beasts meets expectations in the same vein as Bumblebee. In the franchise’s timeline, this film follows the standalone flick and precedes the first Transformers movie from Bay.
